Arrived in the dark after a long day travelling so couldn't get our bearings the first night so ate in the hotel. Didn't make that mistake again! Expensive for what we had. There were some meat items which were grilled but all had dried out. We did wonder why there were only a couple of people eating that night. However, that didn't spoil our holiday in any way. Breakfasts were a different matter. Eggs cooked to perfection whilst you waited. Numerous Asian dishes. Cereals, different types of breads and pastries. Something for every taste, in fact.

What a setting though. Right on the fabulous Bentota beach. Our room was on the second floor overlooking what must have been a 150 metre long swimming pool. There was a second pool further along the grounds as well as a spa and seafood restaurant.

The rooms were spacious, well maintained and very clean. We were supplied with adequate tea and coffee. Something not many hotels do. Two tea bags daily is usually the limit.

There are a number of small restaurants directly opposite. You just have to step over the railway line to access them. We tried a couple and ate Sri Lankan curries. Exceptionally good and cheap.

Everyone went out of their way to assist and usually liked to ask about your day and how you were enjoying their country. The young man who cleaned our room was very friendly and carried out his duties professionally. Always asked whether he was doing a good job for us.

Lovely place to spend the last 4 days of our tour, right on the beach, chilling out.

We were anxious about our stay at the surf hotel after reading some bad reviews but I’m happy to say we had the loveliest of times at the surf. As soon as we arrived we were treated with the warmest of welcomes and quickly settled in to our lovely sea view room. The rooms were lovely and clean with fantastic balcony’s and all the staff couldn’t be nicer to me and my family. George our little one was remembered by all staff and they always asked if we needed anything for him. Breakfast was great and the beach and pool were lovely. We would definitely go back again.
Yes there are a few ants but to be honest your in Sri Lanka you are going to find a few ants in your room. Every day our room was cleaned to an excellent standard it’s just what you have to expect going to an exotic country.
Thank you Surf Hotel!

Read all the reviews before we stayed but only a few seemed to be correct and true.

Don't be fooled by the hotel lobby. This is a 3-4 star at best!!

Location and beach are absolutely lovely but that's where the 5 star ends

We had a deluxe room by the long blue pool on Ground floor.(my 2yr old loved the squirrels n lizards at the back door)

If you don't get up at 6am and put a towel on the 8 sun loungers that have a parasol.. you will basically have to burn in the sun or stay in your room!!

Don't know how many rooms the hotel has but it doesn't have anywhere near enough poolside staff.

When I pointed out this to staff i could locate they laughed, shrugged and even manager said sorry but we don't have anymore umbrellas. We can get you one tomorrow!!
(My wife was pregnant and we were travelling with a 2yr old)

This hotel really struggles with its staff.. Only a few know what they should be doing!! And sadly they all work in reception..

Breakfast has lots of choice but not great produce and most western stuff is cold.

Beach bar/restaurant we waited 35 minutes for 3 sandwiches 1 was made by the chef in front of me, which was made in 5 minutes the other 2 from the main restaurant that took another 30 minutes to arrive!!
Unreal..

The train noise wasn't too bad for us but can understand it's worse in other rooms as they run from 6am till 10pm

Ants and flying things in the room every nite and a/c is noisy but don't kick out much cold air!!(Very dated)

For the price range id suggest you look elsewhere on the same beach!!

Especially if you want a sunbed n parasol and good service.

Before I went on holiday to stay at the Surf Hotel, I spent time reading the reviews on Tripadviser to see what people thought of the hotel. Some of the reviews I found to be unrecognisable to what I found.
First of all I thought that wherever you went the staff were really lovely and friendly and always smiling.Everyone would welcome you and were always polite and obliging.
The location of the hotel was right on the beach, stayed in a deluxe room on the first floor with wonderful views of the beach and the sea. Every morning one would wake up with stunning views of the sea.
Sameer our room attendant kept our room splendid and clean.
The only reason for 4 stars review is because in the evenings there was nothing to do and the bar was dead at night.
Also with the buffet at breakfast where the food should be hot it was cold. But then when eating out it was the same. I think where buffets are concerned it always the same. Overall we had a wonderful time, I cannot fault the staff for their friendliness and their smile. Nothing was too much trouble for them if you needed anything and we felt quite welcome at all times.
We both loved the sound of the trains at the back of the hotel and didn't bother us whatsoever.
We didnt get on very well with eating out but then that is nothing to do with the hotel itself. Qverall we did love staying at The SURF HOTEL and thank you to all the staff at the hotel for making our stay enjoyable.

Room Tip: deluxe room
