Owner description: The New York State Capitol has served as the seat of government for New York since the 1880's. Over 125 years old, the building is a marvel of late 19th-century architectural grandeur. Built by hand of solid masonry, it took 5 architects and 32 years to complete. Over the years meticulous restoration has been done to maintain and protect the Capitol for future generations of New Yorkers.

There is so much to see. You are allowed to wander the building unassisted which is nice. There is a map handed out at the information desk, which is also where you sign up for the hour long tour, which only scratches the surface of what there is to see there. Unfortunately, they were on recess so we could not see anything of that nature going on, but still a great tour and time spent there.
Parking in the visitor lots is only $10 prior to 11AM entry and $5 after for the entire day.

If you can put politics aside and just take a few moments to really appreciate the painstaking efforts to construct this Gothic-inspired building, then you will definitely get a kick out of this. The tour was very informative and our guide was friendly. All of the chambers, including for the House and the Senate, were well laid out and a joy to behold. So take a few minutes from the Sun and go on an art tour of the most expensive Capitol Building created.

NY state capitol is a beautiful structure on hill. Enter through either side - can’t enter through front. Easy indoor access to NY Museum and Observatory.

This is a great area to go for a walk on the weekends. You’re right in the heart of downtown.

It’s an easy walk to restaurants, the museum and the capital building. The plaza is beautiful during the summer. The fountains are filled and it’s one of my favorite places to go for a walk.

During the winter is is way too cold to walk around, trust me stay inside, the wind can make for a bad time. BUT there is an ice rink in the winter. It’s very cheap, about $5 to rent skates and there’s no entry fee. This is one of my favorite parts of the winter in Albany.

During the weekdays definitely visit the concourse, it’s underground, and has various places to get a quick bite and interesting pop up vendors. But everything is mostly closed on the weekends, so unless you’re curious and want to maybe see the art down there, there’s nothing else to do.
