Villa Padi Menari
Spent 12th to 15th july 2014 at Olives villa in Ubud
First, the pros :
Communication with olive from the get-go was smooth, warm, very helpful and easy. She is full of little tips and very familiar with the area as this is her home away from home. Something she stresses on is partaking of the villa and its environs in the spirit in which she intends to let it - you're a guest in someone's home . This is important to consider when you realise that she means its her home and not a 5 star hotel with all the trappings one would expect at such an establishment.
The villa is as advertised. Its pretty close to the pictures. Its tucked away about a 15-minute scooter ride from the city center amidst lush green paddy fields and is quite secluded - which is what we were looking for to wash the big city stress off before we headed down to Seminyak for the remainder of our Bali holiday. Complete privacy to even hang out in the buff if you so choose!
The master bedroom is comfortable and well appointed with a fabulous bathroom. The upstairs bedroom is also quite large and comfortable but with a much smaller bathroom.
The common area by the pool is where we spent most of our time and it serves its purpose well.
The staff: NoNo is your man . He picked us up at the airport and was extremely helpful throughout our trip. Communication is not a problem as he speaks perfect English and is savvy with the area even though he lives in Denpasar. He helped with scooter rentals and taxis and we used his private vehicle when we needed a full day hire . Reasonable rates , at par with other professional rentals. However, as it was Ramadan when we visited and he was fasting, we felt obliged to let him off by 6 PM so he could head home to break his fast. This wasn't such a big deal as usually by that time of day we were headed home to relax and head out to town again later by scooter or taxi.
The housekeeper had been recently changed and so was still learning the ropes I suppose but was sweet and while breakfast the first day was not the best, it improved on the second day when Nono had a word with her. The rooms were done up well every day , however.
There is an unobtrusive security guard at night who rented us his own well kept scooter.
There are considerate little touches everywhere , like a sound system that is compatible with all devices, massages arranged at the villa ,converters for your plugs, umbrellas , and a collection of books. There is a fruit basket on arrival which saw us through both days and a bottle of the local red wine was provided . Beyond this, stock up on your own supplies if you plan to cook in situ. The nearest warung (or small roadside eatery) is a 5 minute walk away and serves a few local specialties which weren't bad and super cheap. There's also a few small basic supply stores on the main road close to the villa but if you want anything more involved , its a schlep to the city center.
The cons and other observations :
There is a modicum of wear and tear in the finer details , when you notice them. The curtains on our main bedroom entrance had a couple of holes. The sliding door itself has a slight gap at the bottom and we were concerned about creepy crawlies coming in. There are a few harmless black ants and I was always sure to shake out my shoes the morning after. The plug and wire in one bedside lamp was bust and wasn't fixed even after telling nono- he did get a replacement but the electrician never showed. The tub in the master bedroom is beautiful but takes forever to fill and by the time its half full, the water is luke warm and none of the other bathrooms has any hot water left.
The pool is lovely but as it rained pretty copiously while we were there, it was too cold to get in. Not a fault of the villa itself, but something to consider.
When the housekeeper leaves in the evening, you're on your own to fend for things, so keep that in mind as well- again, this isn't a hotel with 24 Hr room service.
The villa is in a lush tropical village and therefore prone to bugs and mosquitoes, but they light coils and please carry your own repellents - we were warned well in advance of this and it wasn't much of an issue but if you've been warned here now.
Nono is not very savvy when it comes to shopping but will patiently wait wherever you take him when you've done your homework. He did recommend some sightseeing which was met with some resistance at first but we were glad we heeded his advice by the end of it. Also, he lives about 45 minutes away so don't keep him too long into the night .
All in all, a pleasant stay if you want peace and quiet away from the main touristy hub and in the middle of a lush village setting.
Thanks,Olive and Nono!

Thank you so very much for the great review, Aakash! It truly reinforced my ideals and passion to carry on sharing my home and essence of Bali. I am particularly grateful for the feedback on how we can make improvements...sometimes we don't see the little things that is lacking, thus your observations have helped us greatly!

Just to address some of the key points you highlighted:

Housekeeper - though he was adequate for me, the previous guy was not up to par in ability to serve guests and was replaced with the new girl a few days before you arrived. You are very kind to understand that she was still learning the ropes. She is improving by the day under the tutoring of Nono and hopefully you will be impressed next time you come back :)

Wear & tear - constant improvements and upgrading is being carried out. Because we are in the elements and high humidity, things tend to wear out much more quickly. We are always battling gaps and cracks due to the soil movement which is common on high water ratio land like the sawah.

Hot water supply - we will look into upgrading the hot water tank with a pump to increase its capacity and volume output.

Shopping & sightseeing - Nono is the villa manager first and foremost and is doing the driving as an added value to guests. For guided tours and full time driver, I would recommend a few other guys from Ubud who do it as a profession and so can give it their full commitment and service.

High season & Ramadan - During this time, labour and services tend to back up and slow down. That's when the handyman, electrician, etc. say they'll come but show up 5 days later!

Some major renovation and improvements are in the pipeline and I hope you'll be back again next year to enjoy it. In the meantime, happy travels and keep in touch.

“Luxurious Villa 10 minutes from Ubud”

A group of friends and I recently stayed at the Villa Padi Menari and had a wonderful time. Olive was incredibly helpful and proactive in coordinating our pick-up and making suggestions for excursions around Ubud. Our driver Nono was great- he took us on a tour of rice terraces and to the Hot Springs near Mt Batur. He even helped us out with a sketchy encounter with the Indonesian police while we were in town (we were pulled over on scooters for running a stop sign that didn't exist- he talked them into letting us go without having to bribe them).

The villa itself was incredible - 3 large master suites each decorated to perfection. So many details, I took photos of pretty much everything. It was great to scoot around in the area too - caught a couple of great sunsets over rice terraces.

The only downside is that because the villa is located in the middle of rice fields there are a lot of mosquitos and wasps. However, the gorgeous setting and luxurious villa were worth a few mosquito bites.

Thanks for the great accommodation - hope to visit again!

Hi Jenn,

Thank you for your great feedback. This helps us in trying to improve conditions where we can, though we can't really do much about the bugs unless pesticides is used. I'm sorry to hear about the sketchy police encounter but am glad Nono was contactable to help. Our community is always battling with the dodgy authority issues, as long as we can curb bribery, the situation should improve slowly but surely. Anyhow, we are so glad you and your friends had a great time. Come back soon!

Warmest regards,
Olive
