When you reach Sonamarg, for the local sight seeing ask for Naik Imtiyaz he is a great tour guide who also does trekking tours.

The place is unregulated by J & K Tourism .There are local touts who would offer you snow shoes/sledges/snow scooters .They will try to flees money out of you .We were 4 people .They started by asking Rs.2000 per person for the sledge .Finally negotiated for Rs.1200 (Actual rate is Rs.600) .They did not tell us that there will be helpers to push you on the sledge uphill .The helpers (Local boys) demanded for Rs.300 per person extra for their services .Lots of displeasure happened due to that .Finally had to pay Rs.200 per helper . The scenery uphill was mesmerizing. The Golf course was fully covered with snow . Be careful to negotiate hard with touts and include shoes and helpers in your deal before you climb up and be ready for a rude shock.

Sonmarg was the first place we visited after landing in Srinagar. And ,it was a really really unpleasant experience.

First of all ,our driver didn't inform us that zero point was closed(pretty sure he would have had that info). Once we reached Sonmarg,he directly stopped at the first parking spot of whatever ,where there was a bunch of these local guys with boots and sledges etc.
The minute we got down from the car, they surrounded us and started asking us to take the sledge ride. As we were just entering the place,I felt it would be better to walk down a little bit and check out what other people were doing and whether there were any better offers. These guys were charging us 300 rs per person for renting just boots. So ,we started walking further down. One guy from this group kept walking alongwith us and nagging us to take the sledge ride saying what else is there to do here. Why are you walking further down etc ? we repeatedly kept telling him to leave us alone but he kept on pestering us.Further down,we saw a lot of people snowbiking and we talked to the guy there and he gave us a good rate .However, when we were close to taking that snowbike, this guy who was following us started complaining to us ,saying why are you taking from him instead of taking from me ? You're supposed to take only from me because its my number.etc.
We got really really irritated by this and finally we said we're not doing anything here and came back to the cab.

Overall,it was a very very unpleasant experience. And ,though Kashmir is a beautiful place, these local people trying to nag the customers and fleece them are a total turn-off.
There is a huge difference between trying to sell your wares and harassing your customers but in most places in Kashmir ,this is what they're doing. And this made the overall Kashmir experience a little unpleasant.

Tourist Car drivers and local Sonmarg guide are hand in glow for fleecing genuine and unaware Tourist. They charge a rent of 1000 rupee for a pair of gumboots and coat for ONE hour, with those 1000 rupee you could have easily bought a new pair pair of gumboots and coat. They charge 2000 rupee for sledge ride up the mountain. Avoid advice of your driver and if possible carry a pair of personal gumboots. Theirs no need for a sledge rid , you can easily walk on the snow up the hill or play in the plains.

This is one place where we felt like optional. Not much to do in snow filled glacier other than taking costly sledge rides and one should go Gulmarg for ice games which is far bettet than this visit. Also i wont recommend this place for night stay.
