I am not sure if my first review when through.. fantastic, centrally located hotel with a tasty breakfast and fast Wifi. The hotel itself is beautiful and is equipped with bikes, a jacuzzi, fountains, a pet toucan ( not kidding), a pool, and a Wifi throughout. My friend and I stayed in the superior room which has stairs to a loft bedroom! The rooms were a little bit dim lit, but other than that no complaints. The staff spoke English and we truly enjoyed our stay :)

We spent three nights at the Bantu Hotel and enjoyed the quaintness of it. Our room was spacious with rocking chairs as well as a table and chairs. The bathroom amenities were lovely as was the double shower. It would have been helpful to have a bit more lighting since we had no windows for "true" outdoor lighting. Our window faced an inner courtyard.
We were greeted in the morning by the resident toucan who is very colorful and who also tends to steal part of your breakfast if you are eating in the courtyard by the restaurant...all part of the fun of the hotel.
The hotel is located on a side street, off of a local square. It is a safe location and very easy to walk to many interesting locations, including the city walls. Our room was far enough away from the street that we did not hear any loud noise in the evening.
The pool, located on the roof, is quite small, but the pool area has several lovely lounge chairs and umbrellas.
The buffet breakfast was very adequate and eggs can be individually prepared. The restaurant is on the smaller side but food can be taken outside to the courtyard...just beware of the toucan!
Thank you for a lovely stay!

Room Tip: Request a room that doesn't face the street.

Before booking a hotel in Cartagena you need to be aware that there are really two Cartagenas. The first, and the one where 99% of the people would want to stay is inside the walls of the colonial city. However, across the water from old Cartagena is a collection of high rises which is euphemistically called a resort area. We did take a quick tour of this area and I found that it looks better from afar than closeup. The beach is a narrow strip of land that wouldn't deserve that description if there was anything better around, but there isn't. So make darn sure the hotel you're booking is in the right place.

Old Cartagena has every type of possible accommodations from ultra ritzy (and pricey) rooms in former colonial palaces all the way down to inexpensive hostels in the Gethsemane area. They pretty well all have one thing in common - the incredible ambience that comes from staying in a place that might be up to four hundred years old. While Lovejoy wrote that "Stone walls do not a prison make", they actually do make for a great place to stay, as long as you know you can leave.

The Bantu Hotel in Cartagena. It was the nicest place we stayed in Colombia and was just a great place to wind down in a very laid back and relaxing atmosphere. While the name Bantu might seem a bit strange at first, actually its very fitting. Most of the slaves who came through Cartagena spoke some version of Bantu which is a language group rather than a specific people or tribe. Most of the employees at Bantu are black and probably descendents of these slaves.

As you enter the foyer there is a picture on the wall which is very apropos Cartagena.
It is a palenquera, which is the fancy name for the women who used to come from nearby palenques (fortified settlements of former slaves) to Cartagena with tremendous piles of fruit on their heads to sell in the local markets. They are still here, but not as much to sell the fruit as to collect money for having their pictures taken. The residents of the palenques developed their own language, palenquero which is a combination of Spanish and Bantu languages and is still spoken today by a few thousand people in Palenque de San Basilio. So, there are more than a few connections between the Bantu speakers of Africa and the city of Cartagena.

So what else is so great about the Bantu Hotel? Lots. There is a definite sense of serendipity about the place. I've included a picture of my wife having a swing in the courtyard. When's the last time you saw a swing in a hotel?

While she was swinging I was playing Ms. PacMan on an old style stand up console. It's one of many classic arcade games which you can play for free and was a fun way to spend some time waiting for the group to gather before heading out for dinner. You can also get a drink from the bar to help speed up your hand-eye coordination.

The Bantu has a great roof top pool, hot tub and general lying around area that I've been known to spend up to 15 minutes at, but if you are capable of actually relaxing and enjoying the sun, then this is a great spot with a great view of the old city.

The Bantu has one of the best breakfast buffets that we found in all of the places we stayed, and most were pretty darn good. Now I know where all that fruit the palenquaras brought to Cartagena, went. One thing I really liked about Colombia was the chance to try so many new types or varieties of fruit. I never realized that what passes for a mango or a papaya in Canada is a very pale imitation of real deal. After you've had you fill of fruit, how about a slice of breakfast pizza?

The rooms are spacious, modern and clean and the wifi worked fine and was free.

One last reason to stay at Bantu - get to meet Tatu the toucan. This mischievous little bird is the hotel mascot and loves to grab anything shiny including the buttons on your shirt.

The Bantu was close to everything you might want see within the walls including some great restaurants, shopping for Colombian designer clothes or emeralds or just relaxing at one of the city's many colonial plazas.

We enjoyed our one night stay so much, we came back again three days later. Hotel has integrated historical stone and brick walls into the rooms and common area. Every sitting area is enchanting. Large tree and rope swing in the central atrium. Pet toucan "Tato" hops around and entertains guests. Rooms were very nice and comfortable. Location is central to Old Town, half a block from a main plaza and the cocoa museum. Breakfast buffet was very nice.

Room Tip: Rooms with balcony can get noisy, you will sleep better in an interior room.

This place was like being transported back in time, giving you an authentic experience in a colonial setting. At the same time, it has a very luxurious, high-end feel, loaded with amenities and any service you can ask for at your fingertips. This is the best of both worlds.

My family stayed in a range of lodging in our Cartagena trip - from all-inclusive resorts, to the high-rise scene in Bocagrande, and then thankfully Bantu. This hotel surpassed everything else by far. The hotel grounds are exquisite: restaurant with great food, a relaxing bar, rooftop pool, and many places to relax.

The location is close to everything, the rooms are the epitome of R&R, and a knowledgeable staff that can help plan excursions and will bend over backwards for you. Honestly, the staff genuinely treats you like family.

Dear Kelly

I want to thank you for taking the time to share your appreciation about our Hotel and having fully enjoyed the room during your stay.

We thank you for your valuable comments. Bantú Hotel has a colonial atmosphere, basing its decoration on the Palenque culture and with small modern touches, which will allow you to live the experience of residing a house of the XII Century.

This will always be your home in Cartagena de Indias and we hope to welcome you in a next stay to offer you the best of our service.
