I'm suspicious of New England Barbecue. It's usually reheated and dried out, and lubricated with gooey sweet sauce.
Smokehause only serves fresh meats they've prepared for the day, and when they're out, they're out. I stopped in for the first time 4:30 p.m. on a Sunday, and tried to order the chicken. They were out, so I had the fatty brisket with collard greens. The brisket tasted surprisingly like brisket, with the rich, beefy flavor unmasked by corn syrup or over zealous smoking. It was fresh and moist. The collard greens were cooked and seasoned just right.
My wife had the house salad with lean brisket. The vegetables were fresh and crisp, and she was likewise pleased with her brisket. In addition to a nice variety of sauces on the table, they had an imaginative choice of hot sauces on the counter. The counter service was fast, and I appreciated being able to eat and get on my way. The prices were reasonable: A half pound of brisket was about $10.00 and my wife's salad was less. The menu was short and simple, and the beer selection looked tempting.
I would definitely stop by again for lunch or a late dinner, but I'm not sure I would stop by for a later dinner if I were heading to a show or coming back from the beach, at least not without a backup plan in case they were out of meat.
These folks know what they're doing, and I hope they're around to feed me for many years.
