Had the most amazing time talking with several local boys and girls. We ended up teaching each other a lot about language and also the local area. We made such a good connection with one student we went and visited his place of work the next day at a local restaurant. All in all it was very touching and wonderful to see the young and old trying to better themselves. A truly special experience.

As a teacher in Hong Kong, I found the idea of helping Asian children learn English FOR FREE baffling at first...

...Not really. This is a wonderful programme, putting together tourists with a bit of time to spare with enthusiastic learners at a range of levels. If you have some free time, this is an excellent way of not only ‘giving back’ but also interacting with locals in a non-commercial sense, something that is quite rare in SE Asia. Get involved!

It was just next to our hotel so we tried it out. It was an awesome experience. The students, mostly teenager or monks, are coming to practice their English and we got really good insights about their life in Laos. My wife was able to speak with a monk which was a impressive talk she said. Highly recommend!

Big brother mouse and it’s sister organization Big Sister Mouse is Lao run NGO focusing on teaching children to read and to make learning FUN! We first came across them in 2007 in Luang Prabang and they have certainly developed a lot including publishing numerous own-developed books for kids and youngsters (check out their website bigbrothermouse.com). You can help in so many ways. 1) Buy the English or Lao/English books to support and bring as gifts back home. 2) Spend a few hours talking to the youngsters coming there at 9-11 am and 5-7 pm to practice English. Just drop in and before you got your shoes off there are several kids/youngsters eagerly wanting to talk to you. It is interesting, fun, rewarding and a learning for yourself too. We did this twice as it was so much fun to discuss with these youngsters having so much drive and ambition. 3) You can also donate more significant amounts to help them set up book parties to get kids reading in new villages (350-400 USD), as well as, sponsoring so they can publish new books where the sponsor will be mentioned in the book (1000-2000 USD). This NGO is the real deal, home grown, doing it the Lao way, sustainably and with passion. Easy to visit as just off the main road in old quarters (check TripAdvisor map or Google maps) so it is just to go!

Probably the most rewarding and interesting experience of our trip. Had been recommended by a relative who had been there. Unfortunately we only had time to go once. Wish we could have gone again. Eager young Laotians who want to practice English and meet foreigners. French man who ran the place (unfortunately cannot remember his name) the night we were there did a whirlwind job matching up volunteers with students. Try to go even once for a couple of hours if you are in Luang Prabang. Easy to find. Check out their website. Wonderful organization.
