“Stylish, cosy & comfy in the cultural hub of heavenly Split :)”

Dear Friends, by now if you're still following my reviews you'll know they're straight from the heart & that I passionately share all essence & details alike! A true reflection of all experienced.

Serendipity or Earthly Angels were certainly looking after us & by our side during wonderful Birthday Celebrations. Research & recommendations certainly play their part too :) So I want to share ours.

We thought it would be a wonderful idea to enjoy Split before heading over to Brac. Due to its architectural history & delights we'd heard & read about, Split was an absolute must to visit. However, being limited to time & tricky needs, we were so very fortunate to be able to do both - delighted & grateful to find & be accommodated in such a wonderful apartment. Simply put - our needs varied slightly in the sense that we wanted to start & complete our wonderful special holiday in this gorgeous apartment & fascinating area. Luckily for us this was possible. Thank you!! :)
Consequently we thoroughly enjoyed the best of both worlds - the island &its beaches & tranquility as well as embracing the historical mainland, its port, palace & fascinating History. EXCITING!

So much so we will do it all over again but actually with more time allocated just to Split next time! It was rather ambitious to attempt to have two holidays in one . . but we live & learn ha ha (or book 5 weeks next time:)

We still managed to cram so much into our holiday .. I don't know where best to start, so many things warmed our hearts, so many joyous memories. How do I begin to share the warm & fuzzy feelings associated.
We had a checklist which helped; we so wanted to enjoy the Emperor Diocitians Summer Palace (built in 305AD!!), see where the Greeks first settled a colony in the 6th century B.C. named after Aspálatos. So wanted to explore - experience - the Roman ruins, the famous cellars & stunning stonework... knowing some of the walls dated from1613!!!!

Our accommodation was perfect for all we wanted to do & more. Only a short taxi ride from the airport & in perfect position for the next leg of the Croatian tour - ha ha - our ferry over to Brac.

The beautiful and stylish apartment was easily found, after a lovely walk along the Riva then turn right into the most wonderful square, feels like walking back through time itself. The apartment is snuggled beautifully into the gentle bosom of the square, its an integral pulse & heartbeat within the quiet but bustling area known to locals as 'Fruits Square'. It just looks stunning :) I fell in love!
Also the square boasts bistro style cafe, delis serving delicious pastries, artisan breads & cakes.. the square is also home to the most stunning statue (Marko Marulić) the father of Croatian vernacular poetry and literature, the statue features him posed holding a book. .. a poet serving his verse to a captive audience - the tourists :)
A stones throw away there are the most divine narrow streets to wander through, lined with ice cream shops, gorgeous stylish clothes, art galleries, theatre, temples.. everything you could wish for to enjoy a few days browsing (& filling an empty suitcase!!) We wandered straight to the amazing (AWESOME) cellars of the Palace to explore, there are lots of lovely town walks, also after a short ascension (also walks/cycle paths) up into the local pine forests - where the views are really stunning.

The are many delicious food & cafes close by, there are wonderful markets & still the tiny narrow streets amuse & amaze. The Palace, the Roman influence .. Croatian style. . how can I even express the essence & spirit sensed. There's actually too many fabulous places of interest, too much to describe.
The History, & well simply just how it all felt. It's a place to experience, a place which invades & becomes, it fill your senses, your every cell until they burst from containment with wonderment, awe & joy.

Ooops, sorry - back to the apartment .. Aesthetically the apartment, for us its perfect! Its situation is a great asset if you enjoy the Old Town, the fabulous architecture, the authenticity & peaceful but busy hub its nestles between.

The first thing we saw of our holiday abode, our first impression was of the balcony, it still brings a smile to my face every time I see/think of it.
It was so beautiful, quaint & authentically Croatian (we learnt that its beautiful green shutters are very traditional & they are only ever restored or painted in a specific Croatian green). So inviting , we couldn't wait to go in :) Theres the beautiful entrance door & then its internal stairs leading up to the apartment (even the stairs are a gorgeous marble, the balustrade, so elegant the way they - in stylish unison - curve ha ha ((I just love stairs)) Mmmmmm, then up into the apartment.

WOW, we were very impressed. The whole apartment is tastefully - beautifully -decorated, a conspiracy between the old & new, which actually blend perfectly together to create a little haven of awe & cosiness, of comfort & pleasure.
You can actually feel the transformation which has taken place during the decades past, the sense of history, the architectural delights of the building in the multitude of mix & of layers in the brick & stone beautifully entwined together on the walls. The rooms have been very carefully utilised & modernised but you can sense & see whispers of the past.
In our bedroom there's a recess behind the headboard, looks like it used to be an old fireplace. The second bedroom has a quaint view into a neighbouring alley, to look out of the window & smile at the village life fluttering beneath. Its wonderful the way every nook, cranny & space is used to compliment the indigenous needs & temperatures. There are typical washing lines & pulleys in every alleyway & its a glorious sight, a real feel of the culture (not sure why but I just love the differences & different ways people live between countries visited - I truly despair at homogenised places ) There are also little electric vehicles doing their daily deliveries :), (its a pedestrian area so all commodities are delivered in this way).
I've digressed -there's plenty of inbuilt storage cupboards in the bedrooms & the air con is a delight! We both slept very well & the bed was super comfy. Gorgeous linen & elegant furniture. Loved it :) Loved the bathroom too, great shower & again so elegant design & excellent usage.
The living room is nothing less than gorgeous, so very very cosy & with the shutters open the sun streams in from about 11am ish until late afternoon.
The view from the balcony is amusingly beautiful, it just makes you smile being on it too. You look down at the locals & tourists wandering slowly through the architecture. Looking across at the converted tower was with great interest & inspiration. Below were the restaurants and coffee shops - all captivate. Surprisingly it feels & is so peaceful, its a wonderful mixture of feeling at peace in isolated beautiful space yet having all amenities near but without them being invasive - peculiar as the square is a hive of activity from tourists taking photos of the awesome architecture or sitting enjoying coffee - you don't hear them
(I had to remember that lots of people took photos of our balcony too - clothes a necessity on the balcony :)

There is so much to do. We spent most of our time in the local area, walking through the beautiful narrow streets, there's an array of architecture which has evolved from Venetian, Austrian, Tuscan, Medieval. We also walked up into the gorgeous pine forests (with awesome views of both the city & islands) . Happily but simply soaking up the atmosphere of our surroundings.
There's a fascinating fish market (no smell?) & some of the most stunning buildings are shops!! (only time I've been happy in a shop ha ha), there's awesome bars & cafes, gorgeous restaurants & the people are warm & friendly.

Naturally there's beautiful beaches & fantastic swimming, with more private beaches a little walk away (so we were told) but as we were not there for the beaches we didn't waste any time visiting them knowing our next destination was a beach holiday. Foodwise, we chose to mostly self cater, to eat very simply but everything we had was delicious & we had all we needed in the kitchen. Oh although we did succumb on occasions to temptation enjoying restaurant treats, just before we headed over to Brac I had the most gorgeous risotto yum, the restaurant had wonderful views too & the staff were fabulous! Ah yes & on our last night before returning home we indulged in a local pizza - which was simply put - heaven on a plate!!!
Oh yes, expanding further about the kitchen - its great, open plan & has all we needed for our time there, its fitted with a below counter fridge, even has a small dishwasher, convection microwave , a twin glass hob and sink, actually it really had everything we needed. Its perfect for a small holiday apartment. lovely crockery too etc etc. Oh & also had a tv (you won't have time to use it) and its own aircon.

Hmmm I'm rambling again - I always seem to write soooooooo much yet I haven't even described half of all we enjoyed - the cellars, the arches, hallways, stairways, courtyards, chambers, stonework, but I hope you get the feel of this wonderful city & apartment. That my description some how reaches somewhere deep within & it ignites a similar passion, one to encourage you to visit so you too can feel its magical charm & warmth for yourself. Dearest Poets Square, thank you - we will return & will return soon!! Until then . . Živjeli!
