Casco Viejo offers visitors a look into the past. Spanish colonial buildings abound. Some are in ruins but many have been reclaimed. The centuries old facades remain but what is behind them is new and modern. The French influence is also very strong because of their attempt to build the Panama Canal. Walk along narrow winding streets and find trendy bars and restaurants offering world cuisines.

This is the old part of the city, which is located near the fish market. It boasts traditional churches and buildings from the 1600s. Within many of these historical buildings you can find restaurants, shops and cafes. The area is undergoing reconstruction and upkeep of several buildings, including the main cathedral.

Here you can find 6 churches in close proximity. The opulance of San Jose church with its gold leaf retablo alter. The Iglesia de la Merced with its antique life size statutes and heavy wooden doors captivate visitors and transports them back in time.

Around the main square you can find several small museums: history of Panama, Panama Maritime museum and the emerald museum. A couple of streets away you can find palacio Bolivar across from the statue of Simon Bolivar. It's a safe and tranquil place to walk around with little traffic down its narrow streets.

Recommend for dining and wLking through the old parts of the city. While some sections were run down, felt like we got the closest views I’d local life and culture in this part

It was a nice area to walk around and check out the new and upcoming sights. you can get the best deals on the panama hats and there is so many areas to buy souvenirs at an affordable price. Lots of the newer shops are a bit expensive but they offer some unique things.
Must try the french ice cream place and the museum of the history of the canal.
