The owner of the Andes Museum recommended this restaurant which is about a block away. The staff is friendly, the food good and the prices are reasonable. We sat in their back courtyard.

My wife had delicious vegetables with rice. Very finely cutup vegetables. I had a good salad. For dessert my wife had a freshly cooked browne (we smelled them cooking while eating) that was slightly overcooked and I had apple crumble which I enjoyed.

Would definitely return.

In a city obsessed with meat (Uruguayans are third in the world in per capita beef consumption), the Tomate is a real find. It is in a beautifully restored 18th century building on Ituzaingo, just a few doors up from the much ballyhooed Cafe Brasilero. Officially billed as a "health food restaurant," it was great to find vegetarian dishes from delicious baked eggplant to sandwiches and salads of all sorts. Service was extremely friendly. Worth making an effort to find.
