“Hospitality and so much more!”
Reviewed 8 April 2016 for a stay in March 2016

We stayed a wonderful 2 weeks at Samana. The location is GREAT! Just a few miles from Plaza de Armas and a short walk to just about everything in Cusco. (btw if you are not up for a walk, you can get anywhere by taxi for just a few soles). Betty is the hostess with the mostest. She will set up tours for you if that is what you prefer. She had our trip planned out so that we could do Machu Picchu, as well as seeing all the sites around Cusco. Breakfast was included and was excellent. It was great to try out authentic Peruvian cuisine. The apartment was very spacious, modern and clean. There is nothing that I would have changed about our time there. Thank you for a great experience.

“I don't understand all the glowing reviews?”
Reviewed 27 June 2015 for a stay in June 2014

I really don't know where to begin with this place. On the outside, Samana Vacation Rentals seems like a great accommodation. In reality it's all a facade.

It started with the lack of hot water - we spent most of our showers freezing cold. The burners on our stove did not work effectively and they were slow to provide us with a portable replacement. The management removed cups, pots, and pans from our apartment so that they could furnish another apartment (why not buy enough to begin with?) This was to the point that our cupboards were empty. We were given two rolls of toilet paper for 6 people for a 5 night stay. When we finished these rolls, we notified management, who proceeded to tell us that we need to buy more at the store.

The driver and tour operator that they associate with are shady at best. I will not go into detail because this does not have to do directly with the property in question. However, it is worth noting for future travelers - beware!

Finally, the property is not in a desired or safe location. It is significantly far from the tourist center. This would have been fine if the area it was in was safe. Here are two examples where we perceived danger:

1) Upon arriving by taxi, we noticed in another car domestic violence where a woman was hit multiple times by a man.

2) We were awoken one night to the sounds of a man being beaten in the streets by a group of people.

Please reconsider whether you want to risk having an experience like this on your once in a lifetime trip to Peru! I would not return to Samana Vacation Rentals if given the option, nor would I ever recommend it to anyone I know.

Thank you for your opinion and I’m sorry that your stay back in June 2014 did not meet your expectation. It’s been over year and since then I believe we have improved in a lot of areas. First regarding the neighborhood, we are located in a residential neighborhood that is close to the main street in town. We are part of a neighborhood association that meets periodically to address certain issues. Last year the main achievement was the closure of a bar that had opened a few blocks away from the neighborhood that was causing noise as reported by some guests. The association also continually screens and hires watchmen that monitor the neighborhood day and night.
I can’t comment on the two incidents described in the review. But I’m sorry that it happened and that the guest did not feel safe. Those would certainly be isolated cases, as for the neighborhood association keeping the neighborhood safe is the top priority as we have local families with children who live here.
Regarding the apartment improvements, we had been experiencing recurring issues with water pressure that was causing our water heaters to malfunction. The water pressure is city-wide problem that may occur during the dry months of May through August. Last year we invested a big portion of our earnings to build a water tank dedicated to our building. I’m happy to report that this solution is working and that we no longer have issues with water pressure or lack of hot water. We also bought new curtains, added more pots, pans, plates and silverware. We also have new convection room heaters for the comfort of our guests.
In terms of tours, we pay close attention to our guest feedback and continually review the performance of our operators. Since 2014 we have also made some changes in this area and have received great feedback regarding our new team.

“good location, and space but no heater or hot water.”
Reviewed 1 June 2014 for a stay in May 2014

We rented for 3 nights , out of those 2 morning we did not had hot water when out side temp is 35 f. we called maid who maintains apartment who speaks Spanish but she was nice and tried hard with heater machine and propane gas unit but could not help, she warmed the water on stove which took 1/2 hr. we called owner in USA who guided what to do for hot water it worked for 1 morning and then again next day we were without hot water . we end up warming water again on stove. So if you are travelling Peru's winter which is summer here in USA be aware of this issue that there is no Heater or no guaranty of hot water . Other wise space and locations are great with basic utensils in Kitchen.

Thank you for your comment and sorry for the problem with the hot water. The main issue is that the water pressure in Cusco has not been constant lately. This is a city wide issue and we have no control on that. Our heaters depend on constant water pressure in order to work properly. We are installing a water tank to ensure that water pressure is suitable and constant for the water heaters.

“Nice Peruvian Neighborhood”

This apartment is in a lively and interesting neighborhood away from all the tourists in downtown Cusco. It is about a 10 minute cab ride to town center.

We were there for 7 nights. Our first night was not good. The pillows were terrible and there were so many heavy blankets on the bed we couldn't move. Since there isn't any heat in the apt we thought we better keep them on. The first thing we did when we got up in the morning was to go buy 2 pillows and remove half the blankets. We slept much better after this.

There is a rooftop area where the laundry and kitchen is located. It is ufortunate they don't capitolize on this area for the guests and provide some outdoor furniture. The view from here is so nice and it would give guests a safe, enjoyable place to relax outside.

The breakfast was very good.

The apt. is good size and nicely furnished. It was easy to catch a taxi from here.

We had a tough time with the altitude and food in Cusco. I think not feeling good for that week has shadowed our overall experience there a bit.

“We felt at home here”

Our group of 4 seniors appreciated the homey atmosphere of our Samana Vacation Rentals apartment. The proprietor (Jay Azurin) was not on site, but his mother, Betty, handled all our needs. There were lots of extras, such as a cell phone to use and transport to the airport. Breakfast consisted of an oatmeal drink and potatoes with cheese and rolls or pancakes. The only downside was erratic hot water in the shower. To avoid this problem we suggest you bring your own universal sink stopper and plan on baths! You probably won't want to walk to the historic district; it's a long way and there are a lot of car fumes. Taxis are affordable in Cusco.
