We were in Cuenca for a week over Xmas and this was a great base from which to explore Ecuador’s third biggest city. It’s one of six flats (each one is slightly different) ecologically designed by a local architect, which are situated on the southern outskirts of the city near the University of Azuay in a safe residential neighbourhood. Las Garzas is an unmade-up road on a 45 degree incline which explains the panoramic views of the city but is not much loved by local taxi-drivers who will drop you off in a neighbouring road 50 metres away. There are buses going into town at the bottom of the hill for which you need to pre-load a card at an Etapa office in the centre. However taxis are incredibly cheap ($2 to the centre of town) so if you get tired of walking, there are two ready alternatives. Our flat (102) was on the ground floor at the front and although all six were occupied on one night, it wasn’t noisy. Valeria, the host, couldn’t have been more helpful with recommendations about taxi companies, restaurants, sites and shops. The flat had everything we needed and it was a bonus to find there was a Netflix feed too. Highly recommended.
