Let's start with location. You could stay in one of the highrises in Quito's new town but why on earth would you want to? The Garden Suite and property is situated on a cobblestone street in the heart of historic Old Town, Quito. At the top of the street is one of the best bakeries anywhere the street at the bottom takes you a few blocks to one of the main streets leading to downtown with its grand plazas, cathedrals, and restaurants. The Garden Suite is one of the smaller suites but had a full kitchen, separate sitting room, great bathroom, and a patio with table and chairs. Perfect place to eat your chocolate croissant and coffee. The owners could not be more helpful and arranged efficient and necessary transportation. You truly are made to feel a part of this great city. A welcomed traveler, not a tourist.
We just spent a wonderful 4 days in Quito staying at Wolgang and Andi's hidden treasure of suites now called Wantara Suites. There are 8 suites in total, all spacious, well designed and more than adequately equipped with WiFi, Fridge, gas stove, blender, and all kitchen utensils and wonderfully decorated. The suite has a wood burning air tight stove to take off the chill each evening since we were there during rainy season. There's a wonderful shared courtyard with a hammock and charcoal barbeque. The owners Wolfgang and Andi were wonderful to deal with, and they have a symbiotic relationship with Marcelo who lives across the street, speaks fluent English, and is available to hire as a driver for out of town car tours/trips.
I highly recommend staying here. which is a 10-15 minute walk from La Ronda, in historical Quito.
Just spent 5 wonderful days in Lagarto and it will go down as one of our best stays anywhere. We rent lots of apts and have never stayed in one so well equipped and perfectly comfortable. Lagarto is really more like a small house than a suite. It's quite large and roomy -- perfect for two people. The grounds are just lovely with all kinds of local statutes, pots etc scattered around the beautiful gardens. We looked forward to returning to Wantara Suites and escaping the noise and chaos of Quito. The doors opened to Wantara and it was like entering into a haven. The wood burning stove was perfect for warming us up on the chilly evenings and nights.
All communication prior to arrival with Wolfgang was easy and responsive and Andi and him are every bit as helpful in person. They are also interesting to talk with. Marcelo is a gem and great to hire as a driver if you want to do any trips, outside downtown Quito.
We saw a couple other units which were all very nice, but thought Lagarto was the nicest. As you can read, we can't say enough good comments about staying in Lagarto.
