This was a great hotel for us. I loved the use of reclaimed items in the construction of this hotel, shipping containers, furniture made out of previously used palettes, wine kegs, barrels, bathtubs, you name it. The staff went way out of their way to help. We were staying on a Thursday night and the restaurant upstairs wasn't open but the staff let us get a bottle of wine and put together such a filling meats, cheeses, olives, pesto, peppers, crackers, etc. tray that we just skipped dinner and watched the sunset from the roof! Breakfast was great with a large variety and the rooms had everything needed (even an oven and stove which no one had used yet). The views were gorgeous but it is up the hill, if you don't like walking uphill, better Uber or cab. Our room overlooked the bay and was on a tight curve so you could hear cars working to get uphill, if you are a light sleeper it might bother you, but my husband and I slept like the proverbial baby in a very comfortable bed. Loved the decor and enjoyed meeting Oliver (the resident dog) featured in one of the unusual murals in the hotel.

This is one of the greatest hotel I have stayed so far. This is not a luxury place if that’s what you are looking for. This place is fun, fun, fun and more fun! Grant and the team at WineBox hotel is just simply brilliant! Rooms are funky and cool with great posters on the wall and inspiring design, confortable bad and all you need in a room you have it, plus a lot of art all around the place!!!! The breakfast is amazing and everyone at the hotel is just so hospital. The view and the fact they are recycleing everything is just the cherry on the cake! Ohhhh, I almost forgot about the great music that Grant is playing on the terase and the good grills they are making up there! Thanks a lot for this great experience! I will definitelt return with my wife!!!!

I stayed here on the recommendation of a Chilean business associate and so glad I did. Not only is this one of the most interesting designs I have ever seen in a hotel, it is very functional too. Rooms have everything you need, including good WiFi. The staff were very accommodating of our early start and got us a hot breakfast with lots of fresh fruits and vegetables. We received some really good restaurant recommendations as well. Parking garage is right underneath the hotel, and there is self access to the hotel after regular hours. The rooftop bar has a great view of the harbour and is lovely to unwind on. Highly recommend this place. These pictures show the room from both angles and the view.

Loved this place. I was in Santiago on business and had a weekend to kill. Went to the Winebox on a recommendation from the W. I had a fabulous double room with a spectacular view of the city. Very interesting project and the owners could not be nicer. Very clean. Very professional. The six course dinner on the roof with paired wines capped it all off. Highly recommended.

Room Tip: The double container room has is spectacular inside and out- worth the splurge. Great balcony with views.

Hi Luis, thanks for taking the time to write a review on your stay with us. We're glad you had a great time and hope to see you back here again soon. Just so you have time to get mentally prepared we will be running some very cool workshops with invited graffiti artists during April and May. We will be hosting Australian street artist Fieldey (check out Fieldeytv on Youtube) as resident artist and invited local artists will be crew UnKolorDistinto so the idea is that hotel guests can do classes with them in our parking garage and then go out and actually paint some small pieces on walls in the neighbourhood. Also during those same two months we will be making wine here in the winery so guests will have the opportunity to muck in and actually help us make some wine!!

I had some trouble finding the way in as the entrance is not obvious. Also trouble finding a staff member when I arrived. No one was at reception and I had to search the bedrooms to find someone.

WIFI in room didn`t work well.

Nice kitchen in the room but no equipment - rendering it useless.

Nowhere to put shampoo/soap etc in shower (shower itself was great). A small shelf would be useful.

Light from outside of the room disturbed sleep as it was shining through the bathroom window, and the clear glass of the shower. A blind on the bathroom window could help.

Very noisy at night - mostly due to the local dogs. This is a problem in the City generally, and not something the hotel can do much about!

At check out, card reader wouldn`t work on 2 cards. This is the only place in Chile we had card trouble yet made to feel it was our fault/issue by management.

눇Great views over the city. 360 view on the rooftop was very nice.

Cool design and ideas. Reminded me of Christchurch businesses in NZ.

The wine cellar tour was excellent - the guy who showed us around was brilliant. Really passionate and knowledgeable. The concept of making wine in the floor is marvellous.

Nice breakfast. Good choice and a nice setting.

Generally helpful and polite staff/volunteers. The atmosphere is rather "hostel-like" rather than hotel. Some will like this, some won`t.

Cute dog!

Hi Richard, firstly thanks for your comments and as you noticed - we are firmly in soft-start mode right now as we had only been open to the public for six weeks when you stayed. So, to answer your negatives only:

1) There are indeed two entrances to the hotel (and both have door bells) but we have taken your comments onboard and will get a sign made up for the reception/wine shop entrance (we haven't done it yet mainly because the wine shop can't be up and running until our alcohol licensing comes through and we were rather hoping to just do one sign rather than having to do two separate ones - but clearly this is an issue which needs to be remedied). Apologies for there not being anyone in reception when you arrived. I just talked to the volunteer who was on reception duty that afternoon and he mentioned he was on a toilet break when you arrived. That said WineBox is set up to be an apart-hotel so we won't have a 24/7 reception desk (right now we only man the desk from 9am until 9pm, or until all incoming guests have checked-in).

2) The wifi is indeed an issue we are continuing to work on. With the amount of steel involved in recycling 25 containers for the structure of the hotel magnetic interference with the router signal is an ongoing issue. Thus, currently wifi is very good in some rooms whereas in others it works best in certain positions within the room. We do hope to have this resolved within the next few weeks though (we need to install a hotspot in every single room to sort it out 100% which unfortunately will take a few more weeks due to all the cabling).

3) As I already mentioned WineBox is an apart-hotel and thus once all of the kitchens are fully operational we will indeed market the rooms with a kitchen. Currently though, as we have not yet installed all of the kitchen equipment in all of the rooms, the presence of a kitchen is something we do not mention anywhere in the Superior/Panoramic room descriptions on booking.com (we only make a mention an electric kettle). Consequently most guests are pleasantly surprised to find their rooms also have a full sink/oven and stove top when they check in. The fridges for these rooms are also on order and should be installed in the next couple of weeks. In spite of the kitchen not being mentioned in the room description, currently guests of Superior and Panoramic rooms can request a full set of cookware and crockery in reception to be brought to the room. As far an I'm aware you didn't at any point request cooking equipment during your stay although, as already mentioned, it wouldn't have been a problem had you done so.

4) Additional shelves and hooks (together with soap and shampoo dispensers) are on order but are coming from abroad so should be installed sometime within the next month.

5) The light shining into the rooms (via the bathroom window and then the glass brick wall in the shower) from the stairwell is only an issue in a couple of rooms due to the stairway lights being positioned directly in front of the bathroom window. Thanks for the heads-up though and we are working on repositioning these lights currently.

6) Valparaiso unfortunately has (at last count) 40,000 stray dogs which makes it hard to do anything about (and trust me the acoustic insulation in the rooms is top notch!). That said we are taking your comments onboard and may well start offering earplugs to lighter sleepers at check-in.

7) The card reader was newly installed when you were here - we have since found out that the provider's security team (conveniently located in Bulgaria of all places) red-flagged our machine the weekend you stayed due to the number of foreign credit cards being used. Instead of bothering to call us to inquire (we obviously could have explained that we are a hotel in the second most visited city in Chile) they decided, in their infinite wisdom, to just block our machine for "security reasons". Unfortunately you checked out on a Sunday (their business hours are from Mon-Fri, Bulgarian time) so it was something we couldn't resolve at the time and that Sunday we simply received a message saying "card rejected for security reasons" which we at the time assumed was a problem with your particular cards. This has since been resolved though and the Bulgarians have received the bollocking they deserved.

8) Regarding the "hostel-like" environment: the WineBox Valparaiso experience is all about bringing wine-loving people together in one place. As a frequent business traveller in my previous life as chief winemaker for some fairly large Chilean wineries I spent far too much time on the road and quite frankly find the experience of constantly staying in hotels by myself to be incredibly dull. Thus with WineBox we have designed a concept which brings guests together and will hopefully soon (as soon as we get an alcohol licence) see them sharing their bottles of wine and becoming instant friends. It will be very much up to the individual guest to decide to either seek solitude whilst at WineBox or take a more gregarious approach (we have designed common areas which cater to both styles).

So, here's hoping this helps at least a little bit to clear up your negatives and we hope to see you again soon!!!
