“Bliss in Boracay”

My husband and I travelled with two friends to Boracay for the first time in January 2012 and stayed at The Penthouse in the Cohiba Villas complex.

The professional photos of the apartment are a true representation of the property, which is located at Bulabog beach. The apartment is well-appointed and maintained, and Marivic the lovely housekeeper takes care of any domestic chores, shopping etc. I read a previous TripAdvisor review which mentions flooding on the balconies, this did not happen whilst we were there, perhaps that was a seasonal issue related to the typhoon season which is extremely wet.

Bulabog beach is about a 20 min walk downhill to D Mall on White Beach. The location of the aprtment is good if you like to leave the noise of the beachfront behind when you get home at night. It takes approx. 5 mins to get to D Mall by trike. The villa complex sits on top of the hill overlooking Bulabog beach which is quite a steep incline, so Cohiba's van service or a trike is a much easier option for getting home unless you feel like doing some strenuous sweat-inducing exercise.

The apartment itself is located on the top floor of the building block closest to the water. There is no lift access and the stairs are deep - there would be about 50 stairs to climb to get the the apartment so this may not be suitable for those with small children or mobility/fitness constraints.

The views from the apartment are spectacular, and there is a constant breeze to keep the humidity and mosquitoes at bay.

“Could have been better...”

Toilets are not well maintained. Flush broke down in master bedroom countless times and water pressure in both bathrooms are poor. We ended up showering at the pool showering facilities because the water in both bathrooms in the aprtment comes in a trickle. There seems to be a leak in the shower area of the master bedroom as well. Please inspect and repair if you read this.

It would be appropriate to have blinds avaiable in the living room. Sunrise comes early and can get quite intense by 7am. It would be nice to have the option to shield ourselves from the intense sunlight if we needed. Besides, the airconditioning isn;t nearly strong enough to keep the living room area cool. Small issue though, just our opinion after the stay.

Drainage on the balcony is poor and it gets waterlogged ALL THE TIME.

There's a stairway up to the roof, but the roof was bare concrete AND waterlogged as well.

Wifi is almost non-existant and confined to a 1sqm in the dining area. Even then it comes intermittently and ALWAYS with a weak signal.

Security deposit of USD1,500 CASH is required for the penthouse and allows for 7 guests (USD80 for additional guests). You can't use a credit card for this. Which means, you'll probably have to do a money transfer or credit the sum to the owner via paypal. Which means additional costs involved. I transferred USD1,500 and was returned USD1,450 due to bank charges. Please factor that in when you're working out the costs.

You'll be assigned a caretaker if you book the penthouse, which is convenient, however, I strongly suggest you make your own reservations for activities on the island. Her quote to you will be at least 3X more as compared to what you'll be charged by the various tour kiosks availabel throughout the island. Honesty isn't common.... even your caretaker will tr to fleece you. Be prudent!

All in all, the hassle and cost did not make it as enjoyable as we planned it. We found many better alternatives around the island.
