Review of Tubbataha Reef

This is our third time to dive in Tubbataha and one would think that we would be so accustomed to the surprises that the place offers and it would not merit our excitement unlike the first visit. Yet, Tubbataha never ceases to amaze any diver!!!

Where in the world can a diver encounter several whale sharks, a number of mantas, three turtles, schools of sharks and jack fish, octopi and many more in ONE SINGLE DIVE?!?!?! And thr best thing of all is that this happens dive after dive after dive! That is how great the experience is in this incredible world heritage site!

The reason why Tubbataha continues to be such a great dive site is because it is actively protected for many years. Yet, it has not been completely spared from irresponsible divers. Recently, horror stories about divers from China coming to this paradise have been the talk of the town. Apparently, there are dive boat companies in the Philippines that cater to these Chinese divers. And that’s one reason why many visitors avoid this group of dive boat operators.

Hopefully, the protection efforts will continue and the Chinese divers would learn to respect the natural environment in time.

If it is ULTIMATE DIVING EXPERIENCE you are after, Tubbataha is the world’s finest diving destination!!!

we were assured by many boat operators that the transition trip would not experience any weather problems even though it is on the shoulder of the dive season. they were totally wrong. we had strong winds and extremely choppy seas all through the trip. people were sea sick including those that never had had problems before. we were unable to dive the main sites and had to settle for those that were sheltered. visibility was poor due to choppy seas cutting out light. we moved out of Tubbataha a day early as it was just not possible to dive further. however even at Apo reef we were unable to dive the mini island which is the main site. thus the trip was extremely frustrating. the long 18 hour journeys were close to hell with our chairs sliding across the lounge room with us on them.

the boat is painted fluorescent green which after a few days becomes haunting. the only positive was that the food was good. the boat does not have a good covered area to enjoy the outdoors. even light rain wets all external areas wet.

the dive team is not bad. Efi was a good dive guide. the dive deck is not perfectly designed. but acceptable.

Tubbataha is an extremely super reef to dive. there were glimpses of that on a few dives. we plan to return in the right season, but will not choose Stella.

We were in Tubataha aboard the Stela Mares Explorer in May of 2018 and everything was perfect.
The boat is very comfortable and is careful and renovated with air conditioning throughout.
The diving is very well planned because there are 4 dives a day (nitrox included).
The food is varied, abundant and of great quality. All the crew is happy to help you at all times.
The dive sites are first class with coral reefs in perfect condition, plenty of fish, sharks, whale shark, jacks, Mantas etc..., for me the best diving in the Philippines.

I would definitely recommend the boat to all my friends and I would go back again.

Worst live aboard ever! We missed a full day of diving because the boat had to turn around in order to fix a broken generator. The management was completely ineffective with communication or offering compensation. M/V Discovery Palawan is NOT worth your time. Find a different live aboard!

Had a wonderful week diving Tubbataha on Atlantis Azores. Saw 3 whale sharks and mantas, lots of reef sharks. Bug schools of jacks and barracuda. Huge fan corals and barrel sponges. The boat provided us with great service and food. Excellent crew.
