Firstly I’d say booking this is my own fault for wanting a hotel near the Potala Palace and deciding that convenience to walk in the city at night outweighed the need for a good star rated hotel. Well it is near. You can actually see the palace from many rooms, although not an unobstructed view. As a walk its 200 metres to the palace entrance and also to the peoples square directly opposite the palace. The view daytime from the square is simply amazing, at night perhaps even more stunning and this less than 5 mins from your hotel is a bonus. And the city centre of Barkhor Street is only 15 minutes safe walk down a main well lit road. But the hotel?. Listed tourist class but for tourist class for Chinese tourists it seemed. On the front desk no one speaks English which would be a major problem if you arrived without a guide. Also no English spoken in the restaurant and no menu in English. Breakfast is buffet but its all Asian which means noodles, rice, curries, soups etc for breakfast. No option of Western food provided. They did make a great cup of coffee though but thats about all I could cope with at 7.30. I love Asian food but in the morning give me eggs, toast whatever. I could name lots of things but curry isn’t one of them. They have air conditioning units but they don’t work. I don’t think they have every been commissioned so presumably no heating in Winter as well as no cooling in Summer. And the rooms are looking tired and need redecorating. No safe in the rooms and as the front desk can’t speak English its difficult to arrange to secure your valuables. Strangely they didn’t even provide water bottles in the rooms which would have been nice seeing as you need to drink more water at high altitude. Bedclothes though were always immaculately clean. Probably an upgrade for backpackers but not up to a good 2* hotel standard but if its Potala Palace at night walking distance you want.....

Had to find a warm room for cold nights in Lhasa - and we found not only a working A/C (which could heat as well as cool) but also a warm atmosphere (considering it a chinese hotel). By the way: The bellboy was the person, who was best in english - Don't expect much language skill (if any) from the rest of the staff.

The room was clean and fairly large, 2 soft chairs, table, writing table, TV with lots of channels (chinese). The beds (twins) was large and like most chinese beds rather hard. Bathroom was very nice and hot water ready. Restaurent was fine.

Our room was to the main street facing south (= sun) but with no problem from traffic noise as the streets was almost deserted from around 11 pm. There are also rooms facing north and into the yard (= no noise and cooler in the summer).

Got a 30-40% discount from list price with no haggling but had to ask about breakfast (this may be due to inadequate language skill at reception). Then got Coupons for free. Breakfast is chinese - you may have western, but we didn't ask.

Compared to european standard 4-5 stars.

Location is perfect - Potala Palace is less than 100 m to the right and the tibetan part of the city (eastern part) starts to the left. 500 meters walk (or taxi - 10 Y) and you are in the center of the tibetan area.

Considering the location, the facilities and the rate - The Tibet Post Hotel is a hit.
