Just at the end of the wonderful flower market is the bird market.

Lots of small birds in cages. Seem to be lots of small cages with birds just able to fit, which seems cruel. Maybe they use these to sell to locals with larger cages. Certainly hope so.

Plenty of live bird food on sale as well, if you are game.

Personally, I had such a fun time walking through bird street and taking a look at all of the beautiful birds that were either for sale or out for a "walk" with their owners. I even had the chance to hold a pair of cockatoos whose owners would have them dance on our shoulders and arms. One small thing to note: there were quite a few cages of insects there (food for the birds), so if you are easily creeped out by cages of crickets and some spiders, maybe avoid those areas of the market.

This was definitely worth the short walk - singing birds in cages are still quite common in Chinese homes, though the younger generation don't seem to do it these days. This is typically the hobby of the more mature man - you see them gathering in groups debating the virtues of various birds and listening to the singing.
You can buy birds, cages, seeds... even bags of live crickets to feed to the birds.
It is a fascinating glimpse into a more traditional culture and very interesting. We were befriended by a friendly visiting family who explained what was going on.
Well worth a visit!

If you’re heading out to the flower market in Kowloon, the bird market is close by and worth a visit. There were a few tourists but mostly just locals. It’s a slice of life that visitors do not get to see. It’s fascinating and sad to see the birds in the small cages. And interesting to see the grasshoppers, crickets and beetles that they sell for bird food.
