If you're looking for an authentic water town, this is not it, as it is a replica. It is difficult to navigate, especially if you don't speak Mandarin. It has fantastic Great Wall access though that wasn't crowded at all in July.

If you appreciate a relaxing stroll though a recreated city that is a replica of old China, like water, shopping, and restaurants, then Gubei water town is for you It is about 2 hours outside of Beijing.

I booked my trip with Niko Huang from China Highlights and had Johnny in Beijing as my guide. They picked me up from my hotel and drove me hear. I visited the temple here, had a great lunch at the restaurant behind the temple (Tofu dish, noodle and mushroom dish). Then strolled the narrow streets shopping, you can take a boat ride here too.

Later at night I took the cable car up with Johnny to look at the Simitai section at night to see the lanterns and Gubei town lights. It was memorable, we also saw the sunset, the sky turns orange and red. Johnny was knowledgeable about the history of this area and the trip planning by Niko of China highlights worked out smoothly with no hiccups on this tour day.

Thank you Niko Huang from China highlights and Johnny from Beijing for being my tour guide, 5 stars all round. Highly recommend this tour and China highlights as your trip planner and Johnny as your tour guide.

I appreciate this complex is aimed at the tourist and it may appear a little over done but I loved it .A real step back in time I thought it was just amazing ,could have spent a lot more time here rather than a flying visit after seeing the Great Wall. Not to be missed .

Gubei Watertown was a fabulous way to spend 2 days next to the great wall. The whole place is well organized with free entertainment, lots of options for a wide range of food. Good shopping that shows Chinese cultural and food. Lots of walking available to Pagoda, hilltop church and Great wall. Well with a short break. We were there over National day and it was busy but not too busy. Friendly people were helpful and welcoming in all attractions and restaurants. Loved it!!

Replica of old town 100 km away from Beijing city centre. You can visit this place in early or late summer. I strongly recommend to go after 4 pm to this place. In this way you can see afternoon time and also night time. Night view is really nice but Great Wall part is not good enough. Only water town part is enough to visit.
