Gubei Watertown was a fabulous way to spend 2 days next to the great wall. The whole place is well organized with free entertainment, lots of options for a wide range of food. Good shopping that shows Chinese cultural and food. Lots of walking available to Pagoda, hilltop church and Great wall. Well with a short break. We were there over National day and it was busy but not too busy. Friendly people were helpful and welcoming in all attractions and restaurants. Loved it!!

Replica of old town 100 km away from Beijing city centre. You can visit this place in early or late summer. I strongly recommend to go after 4 pm to this place. In this way you can see afternoon time and also night time. Night view is really nice but Great Wall part is not good enough. Only water town part is enough to visit.

This is a well made replica of an old town. Also it's right under the Great Wall section that's lit at night. There's a cable car to go to the Great Wall. If you buy the afternoon /night ticket is the best, you can tour the small town and go to the wall around 5:30 and stay to watch the sunset. Then you can go back to the town and see the light show.

We took a guide who drove us from Beijing to Gubei and stayed with us for the day. We did it as a mid to late day event so we could see the town lit up at night. It is a beautiful small town away from the crowds of Beijing. They have a few little entertainment shows that go on through the day, plenty of little shops and lots of restaurants. You can take a little boat around the canals which would be amazing at sunset. There is also a cable car to take you to the Simatai Great Wall which was not very crowded (in China terms) and definitely a must see.

This place is a prison disguised as a pretty water town with access to The Great Wall - tourist trap!

We knew this place was a newly built town all Disneyfied up but we thought it would give us easy access to a stunning area of the wall - we were wrong. The Chinese have blocked access from Simatai to Simatai West, stopping you from crossing the bridge and continuing toward Jinshanling. While we were there, (July 2018) they had also blocked access after tower 8, again preventing you from continuing towards Simatai's tower 9, 10 etc and also tower 15 (the fairy tower),which is the highest point of this area and supposedly giving amazing views - we wouldn't know, as this resort kept us trapped inside the area they wanted us to remain within.

To add insult to injury, there is also a lot of reconstruction of the wall starting in this area and we could see a huge resort being built not far from Water Town (no doubt to give easy access for Chinese with cable cars and bus routes etc up to Simatai West).

So disappointed with my Great Wall experience based in this town. In hindsight I would advise to base yourself in Jinshanling and walk towards Simatai West, or go with a group tour and camp on the wall overnight.
