Owner description: Once a summer retreat for emperors, this 290-acre park is still a retreat for the crowd-weary tourist, who can relax here or stroll around ancient pavilions, mansions, temples, bridges and huge lake, stopping occasionally at a shop or tea-house.

We enjoyed strolling the grounds, though we did not opt to do the extras. We could have spent many more hours, but had both limited time and energy. I'd recommend scheduling a half day here.

This place was crowded the day we visited, probably because Tienanmen Square was closed, which made it difficult to appreciate. Fiends who live in Beijing tell me they go there during the week for a bit of peace and quiet, though, because it is usually empty. The lake is extensive and a good backdrop for the Summer Palace. The gardens are beautiful, very zen, with the special rocks and the old trees. What surprised me about a lot of the special sites in China was how neglected the interiors are. For example, the major concubine's rooms were dusty and the porcelains, jades, and furniture were really dirty. That said, the exteriors are kept in good shape, and it is easy to see why this was a favorite place of the emperors. Jenny from Catherine Lu tours was a great guide, who talked about the customs and significance of the place.

The Summer Palace is a must-see. The colors and surroundings are beautiful and peaceful. Take the boat ride, it was relaxing.

Summer palace is a perfect package for a summer day; monuments, palaces, gardens, lakes, boats and ... all of these came together in a perfect harmony of lights and colors. you can relax or ride a boat near the lake. View of the lake with palaces in background, lotuses in the water and sunlight shining over the boats is just mesmerizing. Bring water, snacks and hats.

Definitely a must see in Beijing, it was the highlight of my trip. It is easily accessible by bus or subway. It is quite a hike to get to the top but there is an accessible path through the park for wheel chairs which is pretty rare in China! You can wander around, rent a pedal boat on the lake, shop in Suzhou Street. My favourite place to visit in Beijing!
