“Seen better days......”

Reviewed 27 June 2018

This was one of the great railway termini of the British Empire in the Far East, ranking alongside the main station in Kuala Lumpur and the old stations in Kowloon and Singapore. Though I haven't visited the Kuala Lumpur station for many years, it is (I suspect) in a rather better state of repair than "Yangon Central". I hope it one day receives the investment it badly needs for maintenance and renovation. The same observation probably applies to the entire rail network in this country. Most foreign visitors only need to know how to find Platform 7 for the circular rail trip (see separate review).

A good photo taking place by the train platform when old quaint trains berth to different parts of the towns in Myanmar. Not for the faint-hearted. Not air-conditioned and can be very hot and stuffy during summer months of mid Feb to end May. Take the slow trains only if you have ample time vacationing in Myanmar of at least 2 weeks to a month where you can travel over 200 miles destinations. Good Luck!

For less than 20 cents of US dollars (200 local currency), you get to experience a three hour local train journey in a circular path, covering the greater Yangon suburbs. Trains leave from platform 7. You can buy the tickets at a counter located on platform seven. See the hustle and bustle of local people and food vendors as they carry on with their daily routines. A wonderful experience

It is a very interesting building as not a lot has been modernised over the years. The main area inside has an old ornate balcony, large hanging light and old offices. I alighted here and spent as much time looking around the station as I did on the train.
