Dinner for two, and outstanding in every respect!

Firstly the venue. It is a magnificently restored colonial style dining room, with towering ceiling, beautiful decor, comfortable seating and classy table and glassware.

We chose the 6 course tasting menu, and it was outstanding. Fabulous flavours and textures, beautiful presentation, and highly original. From the amuse bouche to start, then three fabulous starter courses, a fish dish, a sorbet made at the table with liquid nitrogen , then pigeon and finally an amazing chocolate ball filled with ice cream and served with expresso coffee, we loved every course. We have eaten widely around the world, and this matched the best we have ever had. At US$88 a head, it was great value for food and ambience of this quality.

Outstanding!

Location of hotel is very good and convenient. Restaurant service is very poor. I ordered fish and waited more than an hour. After long waiting when I started eating , could not eat as fish was more than required salt. Whole evening was spoiled. It is very pricy too. Overall not good experience.

The Strand restaurant in Yangon, not be confused with The Strand Café at the same The Strand Hotel location, is the premier fine dining restaurant in Yangon and possibly all of Myanmar. The service, the food and the presentation rivals any fine dining experience anywhere in the world. The venue is stunning, with high ceilings, lots of marble and lots of room between tables – very spacious and very quite in contrast to the chaos on the streets outside.

The chef is Christian Martena, an Italian by way of the south of France where he trained and developed his skills. Though the menu is described as Mediterranean, which it is in composition, the technique is definitely French. Many ingredients are sourced locally which gives the menu a unique balance and each presentation is a labor of love exquisitely executed by Christian and on par with the best anywhere. The service, which is overseen by Christian’s wife who manages the front of the house, is polished and professional - a bit unexpected in this part of the world.

If food to you is more important than just getting fed, and you happen to be in Yangon, visit The Strand for a truly memorable experience.

Me and my girlfriend booked the restaurant on the recommendation of a fellow traveller we met on our journey through Myanmar. We were recommended to have the 6 course taster menu, which she described as the "best meal of her life". Although I did not share her opinion, the meal did not disappoint.

The whole restaurant experience is one that will not be forgotten. The food was spectacular and bettered some of the 'fine dining' restaurants I have previously been to. The chef Christian Martena even took the time to come out from the kitchen and greet and thank all the costumers.

The professionalism and welcoming atmosphere added to a great night.

We stopped by for lunch and had a terrific experience. The service was outstanding, as was the food in a truly wonderful setting. Great menu options and very reasonably priced. Best meal we had in 2 1/2 weeks across Myanmar - highly recommended.
