Kinshasa not being a tourist place, most visitors staying there are business people, diplomats, or people on their way to some area where there is need for support (NGOs, UN, WHO, ...). In short: people with money or organizations with money. So expect that hotels are more expensive than in many other places in the world. You may pay easily double the amount for a hotel room in Kinshasa than in the US or hot spot cities in Europe for a similar level of comfort. My one night stay at the Grand Hotel got troubled because the room was not yet ready at 8 (!) pm (had to wait 4 times 15 minutes), and then it turned out an old room where the curtains just didn’t close (minor issue: the small television dated from somewhere around the mid 80’s). Reason was that all below the 10th floor wasn’t refurbished yet, all on the 10th floor and above was. So I got moved from the 9th to the 15th floor. However, just be patient when trying to get there as the elevators have a strong personality when it comes to closing and not closing the door (open-close-open-and-so-on for minutes in a row). By the way, the elevator issue seems to go back for quite some years now if you browse down in the TripAdvisor’s feedback. It looks to me as management just doesn’t care a bit. In fact, with elevator of this (very bad) quality, the local authorities should close down the hotel until the elevators are fully repaired (and then checked for quality). Anyway: this is my first negative TripAdvisor feedback ever, but I thought I had to share it.

Stayed here for a four night business trip in a double room on the 4th floor. Upon entering the lobby of the hotel you are immediately aware that this hotel is at the opposite end of the spectrum from the adjoining Pullman hotel which are both linked by a indoor shopping mall with weird shops that you will never frequent. My room was quite shabby, although the bed linen was clean. The bathroom was also shabby but at least the water in the shower was hot and good pressure. Breakfast is taken in the adjoining Pullman hotel which is very nice, although meals are very expensive here. Dinner being around USD 25 to 35 for just the main meal and the meals are average at best. Laundry service is also very expensive. The lifts are also dodgy and I was worried about being stuck a couple of times. When checking out, give yourself plenty of time as there was only one staff member on check out when I was leaving the hotel. Much better to stay at the adjoining Pullman hotel if either your own or your company's budget allows. Hotel bills you in USD and takes payment in USD. There are two ATM's outside the front of the hotel, one dispenses USD and the other which wasn't working dispenses local currency. The included WiFi was pretty good.

Room tip: Book at the adjoining Pullman Hotel!

Forewarning: let us not mix up the Grand hotel and the Pullman hotel. Both are linked together by a sleepy shopping gallery. The Grand hotel (this review) offers rooms, whilst the Pullman (see other review) rooms and other facilities.

To cut a story short, the Grand hotel is in need of renovation, starting with the electrical system. Let us mention just a few items:
- the old-style TV, with most channels showing a snowy or dark image, the sound inaudible, etc.
- the rare plugs, when they work, are situated behind the furniture, and difficult to access
- the lift are clunky, but sometimes work

The rooms have already been repainted, apparently to hide mould or other things. But most is to be started again.

The Grand Hotel is in need of a renovation. The paint is peeling, the elevators rattle, the AC is loud and the rugs in the hallways are mouldy. Some of the rooms have been refurbished and you will be okay if you stay in those. Expect delays checking in and out.

The Grand Hotel it is in the same complex as the Pullman, so there is access to a decent restaurant and pool area. Note that the Pullman and Grand are not the same.
