Yesterday my girlfriend and I did the death road with El Solario and our guide Victor. It was definitely the most fun we've had on our trip through South America so far. None of the horror stories we had read on here applied to our experience. We tried on our clothes for the ride the night before, were picked up in the morning (30 min late but that's ok), and headed to the start of the ride at 4700m an hour north of La Paz. After about an hour of awesome riding we had a snack with consisted of an egg sandwich, energy bar, banana and coke. Then surpassed the 8km of uphill on the bus before doing the narrow death road. El Solarios policy is one guide per 6 tourists so in our case, since we had 12, we had a guide in the front and back which was reassuring. During the whole ride they would stop every 15 or 20 min to let people catch up. The guide would also explain the section ahead.
Overall, you don't need to be a great biker, just a relaxed and comfortable one. Hardly any pedalling was involved for us since we purposely went slow in order to enjoy the scenery and be safe. So basically you just need hand muscles for your front and back brakes. Take it easy/slow and you'll be fine too! You definitely wont regret it. Perfect views of the high Andes at 4700m all the way down to cliffs and waterfalls in the rainforest at 1200m. One of the great experiences on the continent! Thank you Victor at El Solario!
