Owner description: Famed architect Sinan built this majestic structure for one of the greatest rulers of the Ottoman Empire. Although this mosque is less ornate, there are many similarities between it and the Hagia Sophia since the same architect was responsible for both.

Blue Mosque closed for renovations so Husain our guide for the day walked us to this mosque and dare I say that it was a better experience than visiting the Blue Mosque.
Alot less people, great neighbourhood, sensational views and quite a peaceful and solemn visit.
Highly recommend a visit.

We caught the tram to the Grand Bazaar stop and then just go straight down the street to the left of the Grand Bazaar.
The Mosque is a 10-15 minutes walk from the Grand Bazaar and passes plenty of shops before turning left up the hill to the Mosque.
Just before the Mosque is a lovely cemetery with irises growing amongst the headstones. After going through the cemetery there is a delightful terrace which offers magnificent views of the Bosporus and the rest of Istanbul.
The domes and 4 minarets of the Mosque also make a good picture from the terrace and we then walked into the outer courtyard of the Mosque which was very peaceful after the huge crowds around the Blue Mosque. The inside of the Mosque was closed to visitors as it was prayer time when we were there but it was still well worth visiting for the views of the Bosporus.

We stopped here after the evening prayer, walking from the grand bazaar. We found the back entrance and entered the courtyard, seeing a beautiful view of the bosphorus from a terrace loop. We could have easily missed it if we had gone in from the usual entrance. The courtyard is lovely and green, with flowers in bloom.

Inside, the mosque is spectacular. It is grand, with an atmosphere of tranquility. The ceiling has an intricate design and the dazzling hanging chandeliers further added to its grandeur. We sat for awhile in the mosque to rest, enjoying the peace after the hectic grand bazaar.

I love visiting Istanbul's mosques and greatly enjoy the architecture, especially of Mimar Sinan. However, the one that stands out the most to me is the Suleymaniye. It is grand yet serene, colorfully decorated but not overboard, and is busy but peaceful. I had the privilege of visiting this cami for Friday prayer as well as the Eid sermon during my most recent visits to Istanbul, and both were surreal experiences.
