“Fun stupa to climb for the views”
Review of Sambodhi Chaithya

The base straddles the road and the white tower sits high above it. Look for the gate to the stairs and walk up 10 stories (shoes off) to get into the stupa, which has paintings of buddha’s life, or take in the views of the sprawling port and parts of the city. There’s a strange maritime museum next to it with paintings showing the port’s history. Note that the only access is up Chaithiya Rd next to the Kingsbury - other streets are blocked off for official use.

If you take trouble to walk few meters ahead from Galle Face Green along Chaithya road, you will see a view of spectacular structure of a stupa high in the sky, known as a symbol of Buddhism in Colombo since 1950s.
The stupa proudly stands on a square shaped platform held by four graceful concrete pillars. To enter to the stupa there is a 11 story tower shape staircase. This could be challenging experience for someone, but still worth visit there.
You can enter into the stupa. Inside the stupa when you look up, you can see high dome with four statues of four guardian gods of Sri Lanka, who are considered as protectors of Buddhism in Sri Lanka. Inner walls are beautifully done with paintings depicting scenes of life of Lord Buddha.
Most of the time the place is calm and peaceful. Entrance is free. You can enjoy some nice 360° views of Colombo city and port.

The chaitiya is in the upper corner of the fort, and currently only available through the road coming from the Galle green face and not via the road at the saint peters church as blocked by the police buildings.
You can climb the stairs up to the to and make the passage via a bridge to the pagoda.
Inside you will find drawings about the life of boeddha and the history of sri lanka
Nice view over the harbour
Beside this building is a free maritime museum but not worth to spend much time

This structure is beautiful and worth a visit if you are in Colombo! It's a hefty ten stories high but the climb is definitely worth a visit to see the city around it! Sadly lots of construction happening around Colombo city at this time but I think it's still worth the visit. Not many people know about this hidden gem!

Unfortunately this monument as well as the lighthouse are surrounded by construction as of July 2017. However the architecture is easy to appreciate regardless of the surroundings, and it's size is truly magnificent.
