“Beautiful stupa on a pedestal”
Review of Sambodhi Chaithya

Sambodhi Chaithya
Reviewed 12 April 2017

Sambodhi Chaithya is a Buddhist shrine, a stupa located in harbour area of Colombo. It is a magnificent peace of art very interesting as you drive along the harbour area. It is beautifully situated on a concrete pedestal. There are many steps you have to climb, I think about 200. Entry is free and no shoes are allowed, and no revealing clothes. It is a religious site. The view of the harbour area and the sea is spectacular from the stupa. You can get lovely pics of Colombo. The stupa is close to the Galle Face Green. This temple was engineered by a Sri Lankan. It is place is peaceful.

We came upon this wonderful structure just by chance on a Sunday noon. We didn't know what it was and after taken a few pictures of it from the empty road, we were told by some helpful police that it was free to climb. As it is a Buddhist temple, hats and shoes had to come off before climbing up the 200 steps, getting views of the harbour and all the construction work that is going on around. Once inside there are some marvellous friezes on the circular walls. We had the place all to ourselves and it was magical.

It is a grand structure - a "Stupa" built at a higher elevation on a platform held by two crossing gigantic arches constructed close to the Colombo harbour precinct. Building of this edifice began in 1956 and took nearly a decade to complete, to commemorate the 2500 years of Lord Buddha's "parinibbana"

It is an important landmark of the city of Colombo

This place is situated in a iconic place in Colombo, where there are so many attractions close to this location. You have to climb stairs to get into the temple. Its good to go with modest clothes if you're planning to enter into a temple in Sri Lanka or else wit a big material to cover up your revealings. There are so many architectural of ancient Ceylon and additionally you get to see the Colombo Harbor in a perfect view.. I would suggest this place as a must visit place to the tourists since you don't have to spend much time in it but not for the people who cant climb up alone.. and this place is closed after 6.30 PM
