Given the name, my family was really considering changing our tourguide's plans for us to visit the Temple of Literature. Boy are we glad we didn't do that! This was a very moving and educational visit. It reminded me very much of the Forbidden City in Beijing, albeit on a smaller scale.

I would highly recommend our tourgide, Mr. Luyen (Lu) at email: phucluyennguyen@gmail.com or phone: +84 (0) 907873948.

We stopped by with a guide. We were told it was a must see destination. I don’t think we would have got as much out of it without a guide, but I think you can also hire an audio tour. It was interesting to hear the history, and probably one of the better tourist sights we visited in Hanoi.

Very good, best to pay on entry for the headset audio information as you hear lots of very good information & high lights as to the history and items on view. The Temple is beautiful, also like most signific sites in Vietnam, it is best to dress respectfully while viewing.

This Temple is said to be the oldest university in the country, at 1,000 years old and was set up by the king who took the first exam there . I don’t know if he passed! The temple was full of graduates in their graduation robes clutching their certificates and having their photos taken which made it difficult to get some good photographs of the buildings without students in the way. We had to dress respectfully which wasn’t a problem.
