“A nice surprise in the middle of Chiang Mai”
Review of Wat Gate Khar Rnam

Wat Gate Khar Rnam
Reviewed 12 November 2016 via mobile

I was there in a nice quiet Saturday morning. Went in by a recommendation, with zero expectations and it was a nice surprise. One can learn a lot about the way it used to be back than, about Chiang Mai and the area in general. Fairly interesting!
Oh - and the temple it's in is a nice one too with a beautiful garden.

This temple is on the other side of the river but can be easily accessed by the new footbridge from Kad Luang Market. It's one of the oldest with strong Chinese influence as they settled in this area over time.
The temple has many original features not seen in other temples. There is extensive use of teak in the buildings and carved figures. The monks' quarters are especially grand decorated with wonderful ornate carvings. The main hall is also beautifully decorated with a mosaic of patterns and fine murals. The little smiling imp holding out the begging bowl in the middle of the floor is irresistible.
The temple also houses a fascinating museum which is featured and reviewed elsewhere.

It's a nice, old temple with a local life style museum. Better check which days and what time the museum opens.

My neighbourhood temple, the Dog temple. Many statues of dogs and real dogs too. The grounds are maintained beautifully, the temple has many bells that sound sweet, the people are friendly and the museum is worth a look. A feel good warm feeling place.

My girlfriend loves dogs......so, naturally we had to visit Wat Gate. This Wat has statues of all sorts of dog breeds all around the grounds. The actual buildings, chedi's are pretty much typical of any other Wat in Thailand. What makes this one stand out is the museum on the right hand side of the Wat (as you are facing the front of the Wat). It's in a sort of rickety old building next to the restrooms. At first, I wasn't sure what the purpose of this building was. But it had a little stand to put your shoes on (no shoes allowed in the museum), so I decided to investigate. There is no fee, but there is a donation jar just inside the building. On display were a wide variety of oddities, textiles, old money (and new), weapons, old photo's, etc. I could hardly believe some of the items were not enclosed behind some sort of security mounts/cases and some that were - did not have locks on the cases. Pretty trusting place!! You would not find something like this in a museum displaying the same sorts of things in the USA. Very enjoyable time spent here!!
