I had stayed at The Shangrila Kathmandu for two days before visiting pokhara and then one more day on returning. Hotel is average. There infrastructure is old and rooms are old. ground floor is smelly and noisy so prefer rooms from higher floors. staff do respond promptly.

We stayed here 3 times during our stay in Nepal and coming back here was like coming home. It is tucked away down a side street along with some shops and the lovely Gaia restaurant, off one of the main shopping streets. The rooms are basic and some bigger than others, the showers also run cold for a little while which can make you think there is no hot water but you just have to be a little patient! The breakfast area and breakfast itself were both very enjoyable but the best thing about this place are the two brothers who work here, they are adorable!!

As others have pointed out, the hotel is not affiliated with the Shangri-La group, so don't expect a property commensurate with those standards. On the positive side, it is a low rise property with a nice outdoor garden area and pavilion at the back. The building itself is somewhat decrepit. The staff are great, and compensate for some of the less exciting features of the property. Those include bizarre electrical outlets in the rooms (a mixture of plugs; one of which shorted when I tried to use it), an extremely hard bed, and one difficult to access given the compact space into which it had been compressed. The room had a stepped divider, separating the bed from the living area. It served no obvious practical purpose, other than as a repository for an ancient stereo system.
Breakfast was not great; I suspect there are better options available.

Room Tip: A garden-facing room is likely best. The street has no visual appeal at al.

I stayed in room 214. Room was very quiet, good size and clean. I think for the price you would expect a bit more. For example, more comfortable beds, fluffy bed coverings, better shower fitting (sprays everywhere but down) and better toiletries. The general hotel has a good feel. The staff are friendly and helpful. Food at restaurant is reasonably priced and good. Check if your hotel room covers buffet dinner, I stayed three nights and was only informed of this the last night so did not utilise each night.
