We could hardly fault the cleanliness of the room & apartment we used or the welcoming, helpful & attentive staff & female manager. Proximity to the water service taxi to & from the airport & availability of local transport to & from town centre were most welcome, as were the free WiFi, the air-conditioned room & apartment & 24/7 electricity supply. We recommend staying in this Lodge.

On the understanding that this is not a business grade hotel I really liked this Lodge. It was clean, secure, the plumbing worked and there was free wifi. Although the room was quite basic it was clean with a separate bathroom and the bed was quite comfortable. The lobby/lounge has a bar and a TV that showed the all important football matches !

The location is down a quite side street near Congo circus, so getting taxies to anywhere in town was easy. It is also around the corner from Sea Bird express ferry to the airport, which is very handy when you need to get a 1am ferry to meet a flight.

From the back there are some great views over the bay.

Room tip: At the back there should be views of the bay.

Very Basic Hotel, but it was clean, excellent service and quiet and affordable considering all the other hotels are doubling there prices. If you are in town for the EVD response, and need to stay away from all the other expats you have to work with, this place offers basic accommodations that are clean and comfortable. It is close to the ferry to the airport so it is an easy arrival and departure. My agency forgot to send transport for me three mornings and the manager arranged safe taxi to my work. There are several choices for breakfast and evening meals. They are very accommodating. I would recommend.

Sadly this has gone downhill. This was my third stay here. I specifcally asked not be put in the goldfish bowl room which is surrounded by windows looking out onto lit corridors. You can guess which room I got ....and they wouldn't change me
In addition since the change of ownership the power is not switched on until 7pm, and switched off at 8am. If you want to work in AC conditions with wifi - forget it. Even when the power is on wifi is very slow and doesn't reach most of the room. Reception area not air conditioned.
When the generator is on - its very loud from most of the rooms.
Fine for the odd overnight but useless if you want a working base and som e comfort at weekends. On the plus side - clean and tidy, convenient location, so I just went to Oasis nearby every evening for wifi and some air con. and decent food

Room tip: Avoid room 23

Readers should appeciate there is not even one genuine three star hotel in Freetown and accommodation standards overall are low. Hotobah Lodge is one of the better ones but with more staff than guest rooms it could be even better. Don't expect breakfast every day at the time ordered, that there will always to be water in the shower, the maintenance person to actually fix things properly, and the internet to work. On the plus side the generator is always on 7.00 pm to 8.00 am if there is no mains power, the lodge is very clean, the laundry is done well, is close to supermarkets and food outlets, is in a good area close to the city, is secure, the rates are good and the staff are friendly. In particular the lady duty manager tries very hard to provide good guest services. The "very good" rating is only by Freetown standards though but providing you do not expect too much Hotobah is a good place to stay and I certainly will stay here again.
