Hoyo Hoyo restaurant has great food!

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 05 Sept 2015
I have never stayed at this guesthouse, but I have eaten at their restaurant a dozen times. That was six years ago. We had dinner again tonight at Hoyo Hoyo after 6 years and the food was as delicious as it used to be a long time ago.
We had dahl curry, boiled vegetables, basmati rice, mutton curry, grilled scallops (came with salad & French fries) beer, and red wine. Everything was as delicious as it used to be 6 year ago. Portions were just the right size. For all that food we paid around $25.Service was very friendly and efficient.

There were guests seated inside and outside the restaurant. I am not sure if everybody was staying at the residential.

There also was a good secure place to park in the back.

We will certainly come back here to eat.

This place is probably the worst hotel I have ever been in. Got the heebee jeebies right as we pulled up to it. Was thinking there is no way we are staying here but one of our group wanted to look at the rooms so we went inside and looked at a single and a double. Think of the Hanoi Hilton prison camp and you get the idea. The thought of a guest not being bit by a wide assortment of insects in these rooms is simply inconceivable. The smell, beyond description. We just walked away and went to check out the other hotel on our list where we eventually stayed (villa des las mangas) which was a pleasant surprise hidden gem do we stayed at the mangas for 30$ more a night in a very clean place.

For nearly 100 USD (2950 MET) as single you get this: The smallest open bathroom which is possible (just for slim persons), don't expect too much (hot) water. Very small and simple rooms like in a backpacker camp. Also matching one small slice wrapped cheese and 8 gram butter for breakfast. Same fixed price for one and two persons in double room (no discussion if you are single, the other rooms are free, and you stay for many days).Lack of interest, unfriendliness and noisy stuff are for free... Ok, in case of urgent need a free and not expensive room, it could be possible, but then was this happened:

Some days before an information-paper was layed out - date of mosquito extermination. I forgot this because I had big problems on toilette all the time... Than starts the attack without last warning. Thick white toxic powder fog was deafening pressed into my room, although the door was looked. I don't get enough air, so I want to jump from the balcony. But there was also the poison injection... I was crying, to stop - nothing. In the floor you couldn’t see more than a half meter forward. I grabbed a wet towel and grope step for step to the exit. I was crying for help because you don't get air and loose the orientation. No answer. After an endless time I reached the exit - but it was locked!! By last power I found a backside exit. I was running out of the hotel. Nobody outside, so I throw the wet towel of the hotel's wall. Ok, in an unprofessional and bad hotel, this could be happen. But later I get the tip from the reception-woman:

I should pay 10 USD for the escape towel!! (Somebody grabbed the old threadbare towel, sorry). I was horrified again, and refused. This woman wants to call the police and don't allowed the taxi driver to go to my flight. So I paid, to get my flight in time... No really sorry, nothing. Information before should be enough. She is "just doing her work". I the next days I get problems with breathing, the eyes and my skin of face and arms (free parts) was peeling completely away. Actually the hotel has to pay for the dangerous attack of my healthy, but ok - this is not Europe. But this behaviour could’t accepts in Africa and everywhere. It's a shame for Maputo!

On the plus side, the air conditioner and the little fridge worked in our room. The sheets were very old but clean - ish. That's about it. In the bathroom, the toilet seat was loose, there was no holder for the toilet paper, the taps were silted to the basin with the gunge of many previous travellers, the bidet taps didn't work properly, the TV hung from a bracket at a dangerous angle - and there was no remote control, the floor was very dirty and the room was very small. The soft furnishings were ancient, threadbare and almost comically ugly. The wi-fi that was for sale was not working, and neither was the card machine. No apology was offered for either of these. We were just told to "Get cash and come back by the surly receptionist. "The receptionist was more interested in her 'phone than greeting us,and there was no feeling of being welcome. Avoid this place.

Hoyo Hoyo is centrally located in close proximity to Polana shopping centre ans the waterfront. Foyer is conservative but cozy, the rooms are so so small, bathrooms are as tiny.Power supply is erratic. The gardens and restaurant area are creatively decorated but congested with a lot of artworks. hot water is as irregular however early you rise. wifi is paid for independently

Room tip: Rooms at the back have a better view of some high-rises gracing the Maputo skyline and it's leafy so a must reservation if you want to try out Hoyo Hoyo

I asked for an affordable hotel in a relatively expensive city. So you get a small room, with a small bed and the smallest ever(!) shower. It gets cleaned, the water is warn, there is water, there is electricity (one cut in 2 weeks). You get to know the staff after a while. The restaurant appears to be separately run from the hotel, and seems to have flexibility a bit higher in their priorities. All in all a nice place for two weeks while visiting for work.
