My wife and stayed four nights at this hotel. I had stayed once previously and visited for lunch.
Overall the stay was a disappointment. The lovely gardens and the atmospheric public rooms were not matched by either the standard of our bedroom (internal doors did not shut properly, sloppy paintwork) or the food in the restaurant. The service was variable; reception staff were generally good but check in/out desk staff were casual and one plain rude. Staff in the dining/breakfast room appeared to more interested in chatting among themselves than providing a service and did little more than take plates away. Breakfast was at best mediocre and, on one morning, chaotic.

I stayed here for a week. This is a heritage hotel with the tightest security. The staff were good to speak to and good to deal with. Please sharpen you French for a better conversation....I had to use my schoolboy French and they understood me. The management needs to keep an open eye about the amenities in the room like the tea coffee maker which would not open.
Enjoy your breakfast it is awesome and over filling if you are not careful you will double your weight in no time.
Yes if you want a quite walk take it in the garden in the morning.

Room Tip: You cannot carry outside eatables or juices into the hotel check with the security first.

Lovely gardens to relax after work.
I agree with other reviews - service hit and miss in bar and Restarant. I waited 45 mins to be served one day - such a shame because the terrace is super. Staff are hit and miss too - lots of them hanging about chatting to each other but not much service culture. There were a few helpful staff.
Food very average and quite pricey.... venture out as another reviewer advised. Again the hotel are really missing a trick.

It is what it is - nice old building with character and lovely gardens.

I have stayed at the Hotel El Djazair several times and it has many great features to recommend it. The gardens, impressive entrance hall and bar areas with its Hall of Fame photographs are very interesting and beautiful.
The rooms and bathrooms are spacious and super clean and the beds are very comfortable.
The gym and pool are well managed and equipped. There are two restaurants, neither of which are great, especially if you are vegetarian, but the Chinese is the better of the two for value, service and choice.
On Thursday night there is a disco which can be noisy until the early hours of Friday morning, so if you are planning to stay on a Thursday you may want to check that your room is in a quiet part of the hotel.

Lovely old Hispano/Francophone/Arabic style hotel full of a mazy corridors and labarynthesque interior is attractive. Rooms are spacious and comfy and good pool and gym. Bar is ok, atmospheric but restaurant leaves a lot to be desired. Best place to eat is out the hotel and walk down to place Addis Ababa to restaurant Carthage or Round point, both good spots.
