Our family of seven, including grandparents, uncle, teenagers and us fit comfortably in the two Seagrove properties. Lots and lots of wonderful cozy spots to relax - poolside, Adirondacks on the warp around porch, the screened in porch off the master bedroom, the deck off of the waterside house... list goes on. The is beautifully constructed in natural wood, and creates a wonderful sense of open space. The bay it sits on has wonderful reefs for exploring by kyack, snorkel or diving. We even spotted a seahorse under the dock. Franklin and Junior are right there to welcome you as you arrive on the island and are so friendly and helpful. We decided to be really opulent and hired Eulina to cook most nights for us and we were very glad we did. She's a wonderful cook and a delight to get to know. We had a wonderful stay.

My family (11 people ages 2 to 64), had the pleasure of renting this house for two weeks. It is situated on the east end of Roatan; in the country away from the touristy west end.
I rented the entire property; 3 bedroom, two bath main house and the one bedroom. one bath boat house. The main house has a wrap around deck and swimming pool. The boat house sits above a dock with a deck ideal for watching sunset.
Both homes have complete kitchens, bottled water and an array of spices for cooking. The owners Julie and Paul Michau ask only that what you use is replaced for the next rental. Bottled water is available at a tire repair/gas station on the main highway close to the house. There was ice available for making frozen drinks on arrival.
We had stopped at Eldon's, one of two large grocery stores in French Harbour to get supplies before we got to the house. Both groceries have the americanized standards from tv dinners to fresh vegetables, alcohol to local favorites. We did find the rum at the grocery in Jonesville to be the best price at $4 US a bottle.
The house sits on an inlet about a mile and a half down a maintained dirt road. Most roads off the main highway are dirt and gravel. We rented two trucks and a car and were able to take the car on all roads. The house is 50 steps down from the parking area and the boat house another 50 steps further down. Good excercise. On arrival; both Robert and Junior; (caretakers) were there to assist in getting luggage down to the house and explain how everything in the houses worked. They were also there to carry bags back up on departure. Both houses have an operating manual that also gives local island info such as restaurant locations.
The rental includes use of the hard shell ocean kayaks and fishing rods and some snorkel gear. Junior, the onsite caretaker, gave advise on the best fishing spots. He also brought the kids fresh bananas and coconuts as well as pointed out lizards and hummingbirds. While we never caught enough fish for dinner, we did have a great time trying.
Roatan offers world class diving and snorkeling. Boat diving can be expensive; we were able to rent tanks and do some dives using the kayaks to haul equipment to the reef near the house. You can also snorkel the same reef. The best snorkeling we found at West Bay Beach, the water is calm, the kids can walk in easily and snorkel and there are just enough fish to keep them entertained; the coral is in exellent shape. Try not to go there on cruise ship days as the beach can get crowded.
The east end of the island is worth exploring. Most tourists seem to stay on the west end. The East end offers quieter beaches, more interaction with the locals; who are delightful and a glimpse at what the island looked like when it was first discovered in the 1600's.
My one suggestion would be an insect repellent other than OFF. OFF did not keep the No-see-ums away. I found the natural product Buzz Away with citronella and Avon's bug repellent worked much better.
It was a wonderful place to stay . The cost was less than renting 3 hotel rooms for the same time period and we were able to let the kids swim morning noon and night. Being able to cook in the house allowed the kids- who could get cranky- to have a tantrum without the parents being upset about causing a scene in a restuarant. The homes are spotless, beds are comfortable, everything worked well. There is a ping pong table, dart board and a few movies; we didn't watch. The star gazing and spotlighting fish at night off the dock was much better than a movie!
