Please note: This review is about the yacht marina attached to the casino hotel and resort.

1. Shelter - very poor indeed
The marina is fully open to the previaling easterly winds blowing onto Belize's shores. The marina walls are merely piles of stones in the sea. They offer virtually no protection against the waves and none whatsoever against the wind.
They are low in the water and as such cannot be seen until you are within a nautical mile or so of the place.

2. Mooring pontoons
These are designed to accomodate only very large motor boats. If you enter this marina and tie up with a sailing boat, you will find the pontoons extremely high making it difficult to secure your boat without risk of damage.
There are NO cleats only long wooden plank-like structures around which you can loop and secure your ropes. Some are loose and some are splintered.

3. Facilities
There are NO facilities available to visiting yachts. We were told we could hook up to the water supply then use our onboard showers as usual. We were told we did not need to close our tanks "as it's all water anyway". We were also told to use our own toilets and if we wanted to close our tanks we could. No toliets or showers were otherwise available in the marina area.

4. Price
We were charged over USD 100 for our 43-foot sailiug boat for one night.
Electricity is charged at USD 75.00 per day and there are NO "per useage" options. The fee caters for large motorboats with air conditioning running 24/7. There is no provision at all for charges for sailing yachts.
Water is charged at 0.25 cents per gallow or part gallon. Very expensive. We were told to run our watermaker if we didn't like the water price.
Also, the available water is highly chlorinated which can be a problem for boats fitted with stainless steel water tanks
Included in the mooring price is use of the resort's swimming pool. This isvery lovely indeed and towels are also available.

5. Shoreline
The beach area between the marina and the hotel resort is plagued with seaweed and very black, brackish water. The smell is horrendous. None of the rooms on the sea front were in use Swimming in the sea off the beach was not possible. Some hotel staff were raking the seaweed into piles but the quantities were unbeatable and several piles were rotting in the hot sun adding to the already very overpowering stench.

6. Staff
The guys working on the pontoons were very polite, helpful and ready to assist with ropes etc. The receptionists were polite but unable to address any of our complaints. The marina manager did not show up and would not talk to us on the phone. We were hassled to settle our bill by 12 noon despite having only arrived at 5pm the previous day.

7. Summary
Avoid this marina. There is a much much better one only 12 or so miles further north.

Room Tip: My review is about the marina, not the hotel. I can only say AVOID using this marina.

Unfortunately, our stay was very disappointing. Here are our pros and cons:

Pros:
The pool was big and basically clean
Most of the staff were very kind. They were able to move us into a cleaner room a couple of days after our request.
The room had sufficient air conditioning
Although the “fitness center” was tiny, most of the equipment worked
They cleaned their beach as best they could
Access to free bicycles (that were needed to ride to Maya Beach for groceries)

Cons:
Very far from town with only one or two shuttle trips into town unless you wanted to pay.
Bicycles poorly maintained ( got a flat 1mile from hotel and had to locate a place to get air in next town)
Our room had urine stains on the floor around the toilet, grime on the door surrounds, stained cushions on the chairs, very old creaky mattress on the bed, uncomfortable and stained patio furniture.
In our second room the garbage disposal didn’t work and smelled bad.
The towel ticket situation at the pool and the lack of access to towels was annoying.

Our biggest disappointment was not being able enjoy the beach. The water was brown and smelled bad. It smelled so bad it was difficult to enjoy any part of the property. This is not the hotel’s fault but important information to share with guests
who are expecting the beautiful turquoise Caribbean water.

Hi Folks... My name is Captain/Chef Lenny Strobel from the USA. I had the opportunity with a few friends to travel, fish and and enjoy our stay at "The Placencia Resort and Casino in Belize. WHAT AN INCREDIBLE RESORT AND EXPERIENCE!!! The attention to detail from the staff was impeccable. The food prepared my Chef Anonello and crew was fantastic. The hospitality shown by Wayne, Madeleine, Romeo, Iceini, Naomi, Mindy, Briani, our bartender Amir, our driver Andrew and the rest of the gang was exceptional. The water, fishing, the tour at Maria Sharp's local hot sauce factory, the water falls and the little islands surrounding was absolutely amazing. Looking forward to spending many moments and making many memories there!!!
The Casino was fun! Small but very friendly and clean..

My girlfriend and I found out about the dock restaurant from some people we met while vacationing there . Our last night in Belize we went to the dock bar in the evening for a late meal and a few drink under the stars. When we arrived at the resort it was quiet ,but the walk into the restaurant is beautiful. There are fountains and lit pathways all the way down to Dock that leads out to the restaurant. We sat out on the lounge chairs and had a drink (the dock is huge)while enjoying the clear night sky, they have lighting facing down into the water and you could see marine life moving around . Our waitress was fantastic , she was very accommodating of our requests. The bartender was listening to music and would search out and play any song that Mary ( girlfriend ) requested. It turned out to be a fantastic last night . And when I return to Belize this place will definitely get my business again
