We really enjoyed our lunch at this cute little place! Homemade food - everything is great! The coconut fish is excellent!

Best restaurant, best experience we had during our visit in San Pedro! The restaurant is so tiny yet so cute and lovely. The chef (owner) even sat with us and chit chat while we're having lunch! What an awesome way to experience the culture and the people! Food tasted soooooooo very good that we wanted to come back again next day although we didn't due to the trip to Caye Culker. Thank you for such lovely experience!!!

When we arrived at the Hungry Grouper, we were surprised to see what a small place this really was. We had a party of 8. The owner was very accommodating, and worked to take several small tables and configure a place for the 8 of us to sit. The menu was simple. Pick a protein, and add a choice of around 5 sauces. The side dishes were simple. Dirty rice, Fiesta Rice (seemed like a Rice-a-Roni Chicken stock rice) Also a side salad or slaw. Nothing real fancy. I was a bit disappointed with my shrimp and coconut curry sauce. After other dinners in San Pedro, this one lacked flavor and overall presentation. We also ordered two glasses of wine, and they didn't have enough to fill two glasses. That seemed strange for a 6:30 pm dinner. The owner was actually very personable, and it's easy to see he was working hard to please all of his customers. The bathroom is was an experience to write home about as well. If you are over 5' 3" tall, you may find it hard to actually fit in with the door closed. Beware. I would try to avoid the restroom is you can!

The owner is super friendly and very accommodating when we came for dinner. One of the group was vegetarian and he created a special dish not on the menu. They're also open to requests to having other sauces with certain dishes.
Highly recommend. Great prices

To be honest we picked this place completely based on the #1 rating from TripAdvisor. To me a #1 rating should encompass the entire dining experience. There are 6 tables with folding chairs on a sand floor. There is no wifi, 2 table fans attached to the walls to move the air, a cooler with ice for drinks.
It is of course cash only. I watched 2 separate tables have to send people out in mid meal to get cash to pay.

The menu is made daily with dry erase marker on a sheet handed out to each table. We were there at 6pm on a Sunday and 2 of the 5 things on the menu were 86ed.
Pricing is a bit confusing on the menu as well.

It appears that this is a two man show. 1 waiter (Owner) and a cook.
Service is a bit slow due to 1 person handling 6 tables. Although the server was very personable to all of the guests.
We ordered blackened snapper special with shrimp, 2 orders of lobster. The food is cooked to order but was kind of flat when it came to seasoning. Ave entree was $22us. Considering the location and it's all local cuisine that was a little pricey as they come with slaw and rice.

Overall this was an average restaurant experience at best. I shortly expect to see some up and coming places knock these guys off of that #1 spot.
