We were delayed 2 times because of COVID, but the 3rd time was definitely a charm! It was a beautiful resort and the staff, more specifically, Jesica, was so helpful when booking excursions! Winston is an amazing bartender, and we enjoyed visiting with him. The owners, Peter and Michelle, were also very friendly and accommodating. The views are beautiful and the size of the resort is perfect. There are 18 rooms and it was very relaxing and quiet. The pool is outstanding! It was worth the wait!

I stayed at Xanadu resort for 5 days on a recent 10 day trip to Belize with my sister and boyfriend. The resort itself was beautiful. The rooms were exceptionally clean, staff was friendly, and it was clearly one of the nicest resorts on the coast. The amenities were very nice. We barbecued on the beach one night which was a great time, and the pool and hot tub were pristine. We did a snorkeling excursion with Lil Alfonse and a fishing trip with Belize Candace during our stay. Both boats picked us up directly on the Xanadu dock which was super convenient! The snorkeling was absolutely amazing. I have never had the chance to swim with sharks before and it was so so cool! Xanadu does offer beach access, but you have to swim off of the dock rather than wading in from the sand. I didn’t mind too much because most days we had the beach to ourselves since the resort itself is so small.
The one downside of Xanadu would be its location in San Pedro. As soon as you leave the oasis that is Xanadu you enter a busy, dusty city filled with commotion. You need a golf cart in order to get around, walking is not a pleasant option. A lot of places in the city and along the beach smelled like rotten eggs due to the seaweed problem. The city itself was expensive, and a lot of the items we bought in the grocery store were more expensive than they would have been in the states. Secret Beach was a major let down too. We waited two hours for food at one of the restaurants after getting harassed by beach merchants. Obviously none of these things are Xanadu’s fault, but I am not sure I would ever choose to visit Ambergris Caye as a whole again.

Room tip: I stayed on ground level but the balcony rooms looked beautiful!

We’ve visited almost all of the Caribbean islands, all the tourist areas in Mexico, Costa Rica, all of the Hawaii islands and Xanadu is one of our favorite resorts. The service the Xanadu staff provided before our arrival answering questions through e-mail or their toll free phone number, knowing our names on arrival and through our stay, keeping our room and the resort immaculate clean, to ensuring that our vacation was the best it was service on the level that we’ve received when we’ve stayed at Sandals. The owner was visible also working every day on the property and always giving a friendly hello asking how our day was.

When choosing where to stay in San Pedro, we read the great Trip Advisor reviews about Xanadu. We were concerned about the lack of restaurant(s), spa, and closeness to town, but we were interested in the ocean/beachfront 2-bedroom unit. If you have the same concerns we did, I can assure you they shouldn’t be concerns.

When Alaia (Marriott) opened recently next door, our family and friends questioned us staying at Xanadu rather than Alaia. Alaia is modern and everything you’d expect of a brand new, large, modern resort but unless you’re staying in a 3-bedroom or the top upgraded room at Alaia, you’re not going to be ocean/beach front as are at Xanadu. The tropical, beach/ocean setting off your private room patio at Xanadu can’t compare to being on a room balcony at Alaia.

The Xanadu 2-bedroom oceanfront unit (we stayed in #10 but there is also #1) is on the beach with a spacious patio including a hammock, table and chairs, extra chairs, and lounge chairs. The unit is not only spacious but stocked with everything you could need. The only item we could think of as an addition for the unit would be to offer a stackable washer/dryer (maybe in the kitchen closet?).

There shouldn’t be any concerns about Xanadu only offering bar service. We ordered drinks from the bar a few days to enjoy while sitting on our patio. The lack of restaurant(s) was never of concern. As mentioned in earlier reviews, The Baker is right outside the Xanadu entrance and offers great breakfast. We had breakfast at The Baker several days including egg croissant sandwiches and banana bread as good as in Maui, Hawaii. Breakfast is about $20 for 2 and they only accept cash. Recommend bringing more cash than usually do traveling because it’s not uncommon for places to only accept cash. After tours, we were looking for options to have dinner at our room rather than going out to dinner. Amber Beach Bar and Grill next door to Xanadu delivered dinner and Hidden Treasure nearby also delivered dinner. We later in the week went to Hidden Treasure for dinner for my birthday. We picked up a pizza from Alaia next door at their restaurant The Deck. The Deck is less than 2 minute walk on the beach to pick up a pizza. We paid $20 U.S. cash for a pepperoni pizza and in less than 5 minutes were back at our room eating pizza.

Concerned about no spa at Xanadu? We went to the spa at Alaia and had great massages by Lizett and Dominica. Again, a less than 2 minute walk on the beach to reach the spa at Alaia.

Coconut Carts Belize offers grocery service where we were able to order groceries before arrival and pay through PayPal. Terry the owner had drinks and snacks stocked in our unit the day of arrival. While the grocery store is located right outside the Xanadu entrance, it was convenient not having to use vacation time grocery shopping or having to haul groceries.

The distance to downtown is not far and we’re glad we had Xanadu arrange a golf cart rental for us. By Xanadu arranging, the cart was ready on property on arrival and we turned in the keys at departure. We used about a half a tank of gas driving to town and to dinner for a week. The gas station is close by Xanadu. We drove north almost the distance to Secret Beach and as far south as to dinner at Black Orchid. The golf cart is convenient even when not going far because it’s hot and humid walking, esp. with having to wear a mask (Covid). You don’t need to wear a mask while on the golf cart.

The Xanadu staff arranged our Covid testing to return home setting up for a nurse to come to our room for testing. We paid for our tests through Venmo. The process took about a half hour and once we uploaded our test results into VeriFLY app, we didn’t need to do anything more on departure.

If traveling from/to U.S., I would recommend not flying through Miami or having a connecting flight with at least 3 hours lay over. With delay leaving Belize and delays in Miami airport re-checking luggage in customs area/security, we had to spend the night in Miami.

Choosing Xanadu was 100% the right decision and we can confirm Xanadu lives up to their 5-star review Trip Advisor reputation.

Excuse the ex-English-teacher quoting Coleridge, but our family of five just spent a week in their top-of-the-line three-bedroom villa (#11) and I can't imagine a more luxurious and peaceful stay. Not only was the room modern and well-appointed, but the ocean view from the deck was like being inside a postcard. The grounds are lush and well-tended, and the shaded swimming pool was a special treat. We enjoyed the complimentary kayaks, and the service - watched over by Peter the owner - was five stars. The office staff was friendly and quick with recommendations for restaurants and food shopping. I strongly recommend renting a golf cart; it made the entire island easily accessible.

Xanadu is in a great location right on the coast, within walking distance of a supermarket and multiple restaurants, but far enough from San Pedro that you don't constantly hear the hum of cars and golf carts. The resort is pristine and they are always willing to help with reservations or anything else you need. Lots of beach and pool chairs so we never had lack of seating. We definitely plan to return.
