We booked 5 nights at the Aurora Hotel while attending the annual Catalina Island Jazztrax festival, and overall had a very comfortable stay. When we first checked in, we noticed a terrible smell in the room (like sewage), and after a staff member unsuccessfully tried to remedy the problem by pouring something down the bathroom drain, we were moved to another room which was much better. We were not in the room much, mostly to shower and sleep, but we did enjoy beautiful views of Avalon from the rooftop terrace deck, and the nice daily continental breakfast (coffee, juice, hard boiled eggs, mini quiches, fruit, muffins, yogurt, oatmeal). There was a Keurig machine in the room for coffee and tea, complimentary bottled water in the frig, and a bottle of wine for $20 purchase. The closet area was very small (we would have liked a few more coat hangers) and a couple of nice bathrobes were provided. We liked the location, more quiet and not in the heart of Avalon, and near the casino ballroom and Descanso Beach area where the jazz concerts were being held. Walking up and down the hill to the hotel a few times/day was also good exercise for us, but could be difficult for those that are mobility impaired. The hotel grounds/lobby/breakfast area was contemporary looking and clean, and the staff members always friendly and helpful. For the jazz weekend, I would highly recommend this hotel - reasonably priced and comfortable.

We thoroughly enjoyed our brief stay at the Aurora Hotel. This was our first time at this hotel and I can honestly say that, from the moment we stepped inside we were treated as if we were old friends. We arrived on one of the early Catalina Express boats and asked if they could store our luggage while we explored the Island. Rebecca greeted us at the front desk and was super warm and welcoming – Rebecca took great care of us during our stay! She took our luggage and cell number – they called when the room was ready for check-in. Further, they held our bags after we checked out so we could explore some more. We picked up our luggage around 4:15pm just as they were setting out wine and cheese and we were able to enjoy a glass of champagne and some snacks before making our way to the dock.

I had just wrapped up a business trip in LA and had a couple of days before returning to the East Coast – so we thought we would hop over to Catalina. We visited during the week of the Pirate Festival at Two Harbors and hotels in Avalon were filling up fast. We were very happy to get one of the last rooms at Aurora. All the ocean view rooms were taken so we ended up with a view of mountains.

Our Standard room was not huge but not NYC small either. The room was very comfortable and laid our efficiently to maximize space. It had all the amenities: in-room HVAC, Keurig machine, Flat-Screen TV, Mini-fridge, Microwave and Safe. The hotel interior and rooms seemed to have been recently renovated/updated. Everything was stylish, clean and fresh. The bed was Super-Comfy! BTW - Although the boat over was filled with ‘pirates’, they did not seem to invade Avalon; which remained chill and not overly crowded by any means – No need to avoid Avalon during the Pirate Fest.

As other reviewers have mentioned, the Aurora Hotel is located off the main strip and up a ‘little’ hill. This is major plus, as this area is So Quiet being away from the hussle&bussle of the main drag. The view from the rooftop deck is awesome!

We had no issues walking the 5mins to and from the dock, shops, beach and restaurants. I could see the hill being a little steep for those with mobility issues, but the walk was fine for us.

There is no pool at this hotel, but the Island Spa is located 60ft from the Aurora (2 min walk) at the bottom of the hill with a pool, hot tub, saunas, massages etc.

Quiet, relaxing and reasonably priced. We will definitely return to the Aurora Hotel on our next trip to Catalina – no need to look at any other properties.

The Aurora hotel is a very nice little hotel located up a steep hill from the main Marina in Avalon. It's a short walk from the hotel down to the main street where all the shops are located. The hotel itself is very nice, the staff and especially Chris is extremely friendly and very helpful. There is no elevator in this hotel you must take your bags up the stairs to your room. The rooms are very small but well kept and very clean. The beds do leave a little to be desired they aren't the most comfortable. There is a very nice deck on the third floor where you can sit with your drink and look out over the harbor. I will definitely stay here again next time I come.

Our room had an ocean view and we were next to the rooftop, it was perfect. Small rooms but well taken care of and the staff was exceptional (friendly and helpful). Highly recommend this hotel. It is just a short walk down to the main street.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the ocean
