Pacific Oaks Vineyard sits on a west-facing ridge with a view of the grapes, redwoods and then the ocean in the distance. Our quarters gave us the privacy of our own entrance but included the enjoyment of the stately home's wraparound porch. While watching the sunset we enjoyed a glass of the vineyard's own Pinot Noir, and in the morning we carried our own breakfast outside to the table overlooking the vast green lawn opening behind the house. At night, the milky way was clear as I remember it from childhood. Our last morning opened with Peter and Judy working in the vines just below us, netting the grapes. It was another sign that this special place is the result of personally held stewardship.
The location is a short drive (less than 10 minutes) from the village of Sequel. We divided our time visiting beaches close by, dinner at The Sparrow, breakfast at Capitola's Avenue Cafe, music at Kuumbwa in the evening. I really craved simply being at the vineyard. It offered everything we hope for in a get-away: the feeling of having gone a great distance (while Sequel was just down the road), morning walking, quiet, quiet, quiet (until I, accidentally and mortifyingly, hit my car alarm), and absolutely inspirational beauty.
Our accommodations were comfortable and clean. We had our own enclosed sun porch, bedroom, and full bathroom. Peet's coffee was provided (as well as the bottle of Pinot), and a mini fridge and microwave were perfect for assembling our breakfast.
When we arrived the first day, Judy greeted us warmly, and when I asked about the history of the place, she ended it with "there is no place I'd rather be." Our brief stay left us feeling the same way. We did not want to leave, especially because we ran short of time to enjoy the lovely indoor swimming pool.
We will always remember this place fondly, and hope to return. Future guests will not be disappointed! (It's a perfect venue for weddings.)
Thank you, Judy and Peter.
