The drive in seemed sketchy - coming from Calaveras State Park - it was a windy narrow road, but once we started our Tour- SIMPLY SPECTACULAR!- With a group of us fascinated by geology, biology and history, Isaac our Tour Guide did not disappoint! he was full of good historical, and geological knowledge. He and Andrew are great, kind and fun guys to talk with! We all felt we were truly spelunking in and around cracks and crevices full of twists and turns that opened into beautiful caverns kept completely natural. You do not want to miss this one. This is definitely better than other cave tours by far!

We showed up here one afternoon and as soon as we bought our tickets a busload of 3rd graders parked and lined up for the same tour. My boyfriend and I are all about education for the littles, but we couldn't imagine being inside a cave with 30+ eager to learn (read: rambunctious) children. The director offered to let us come back at a different time or a different day. He actually refunded our tickets and gave us a free pass for when we wanted to come back or to use at one of the other caverns. We ended up coming back another day and had the best time! Our guide (I think Andrew was his name) was funny, sarcastic, very knowledgeable and had the best puns! There are some slippy spots and areas you need to bend almost in half just to walk through so if you aren't very bendy or steady on your feet this probably isn't the place to visit. Other than that I highly recommend visiting the California Caverns!

I visited California Caverns with my grandson. We found this cavern to be intriguing and different from Moaning & Mercer Caverns (fewer stairs) & we felt more like cave explorers even on the basic tour. We saw the mud covered people from the mire adventuresome tours.

Our tips:
*wear shoes instead of sandals
*take them up on their offer of helmets to avoid bonking your head
*go now, water levels in the caves are down making more cave 'rooms' accessible on tour (unfortunately , the Jungle Room was closed off & we were unable to see it this time). A lady on our tour suggested calling ahead to find out how much of the cavern will be open when you tour.
*a fun and educational excursion on a hot day since the Caverns are cool year round.

Our next excursion will be to the fourth cavern in our area, Black Chasm.

The walking tour through California Caverns is interesting, fun, unforgettable.
There are rooms where people used to get married, rooms where city council (or was it county supervisor?) meeting took place long ago. I've taken the tour with friends, with family and by myself and it was always great!

We did the walking tour and it was easy.. it was about 70 degrees down there and 100 outside. My five year old son had no problem walking the stairs. Pictures and videos won't do justice to this place.
