Owner description: The Museum of KGB Cells is situated in the "gray house" which in the 1940s-1950s housed the NKVD/KGB. The basement floor, where a remand prison for political prisoners was situated, is open for visitors. Part of the cells, lock-ups and the corridor in the basement have been restored in their former shape. Other former cells house an exposition, which gives an overview of the history of the Estonian Resistance Movement, the crimes of the communist regime and life in a remand prison. In the exhibition you can find plans drawn by the Soviet authorities for conducting deportations, leaflets distributed by the schoolchildren's underground organizations, objects from the GULAG prison camps, information about Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn's connection to Estonia, as well as a great number of other photos and documents illustrating Estonian contemporary history. In Estonia the total number of people who fell victims to different repressions from the security organs amounted to approximately 122,000 and more than 30,000 of them lost their life.

I highly recommend! It's small with just a few cells, but there is a lot of information to read that is fascinating. There's a timeline of Estonian occupations over the last century and stories of Estonians who were involved in the resistance. Sad as many of them were tortured or killed. Worth the visit for sure.

You might think because the museum is so small that it might not have a lot inside, but they really make the best use of the space. The information does not sensationalize, but contextualizes, and is a sobering and valuable experience.

You can just walk through the corridors in few minutes, but if you stop, read and think you will learn a great deal about Estonians and human behavior in general.

A source for several potential movie scripts as well...

Why visit a museum that preserves Soviet KGB cells? As George Santayana wrote, "Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it." Look for the door on the building carefully -- the single sign for the museum is easy to miss.
