Loved the atmosphere in the square during the festive season. The had a buzz about it with live entertainment and all the tourists and locals joining in.

We visited in autumn when the days were still warm but the night chilly. Plenty of bars and restaurants lining the square for a coffee to sit and people watch or a drink and meal. The Gothic Town Hall is the oldest in the Baltic area and Scandinavia.

We visited Tallin first weekend in December, primarely for the Christmas Market. The last years we have been to markets in Praha, Riga and two times Krakow. The Tallin marked is one of the best. Very good quality on most of the things sold in the small shops. And prices were reasonable - The Square itself is worth a visit - even if it is no Christmas marked.
I think everybody has a fear of terrorist attacks on such arrangements, and we have seen how other markets block roads to stop cars. Tallin has done this with cute stons ducks. The best we have seen.
(Oslo, Norway, has the ugliest solution. They have used concrete rings meant for building septic tanks)

What a nice square it is. It was thronging, full of life and Christmas cheer. Lots of stalls to see with things you would never see at home (England).
You could even buy a Reindeer Fur if you wanted for 150 Euros!
There was loads of food of different types with different local touches. A good place to spend a couple of hours or more. On Saturday night there were various shows on the stage within the market - all good fun.

Very atmospheric, especially once it's dark with the enormous tree lit up, carols in the background and the whole square thronged with people. A different perspective in daylight when the buildings are more conspicuous. There is always plenty to see and do and a coffee while people watching a good way to while away some time.
