My wife and I stayed at Pension Athanor for 4 nights in April, 2019 in the Apartment With Sauna. The best aspects of our stay are the quiet location away from the tourist traffic and the large, roomy apartment.

Pension Athanor is located in a quiet part of town, a 5 minute walk across the Vltava River to the main town square. We had to walk an enjoyable, scenic, roundabout detour that went through a beautiful park and past a Jewish synagogue due to the closing of the stairs to the bridge because of construction. We would definitely stay here again on our next visit to Cesky Krumlov.

Pros:
- Large, quiet apartment with 3 separate rooms for bedroom, kitchen/dining area, and bathroom/sauna.
- Quiet part of town away from the many big-bus tourist groups
- Short, normally 5 minute walk (without construction) down stairs and across bridge to main square.
- Very friendly ladies at reception desk and breakfast.
- On-site, enclosed parking for at least 3 cars
- Good enough Wi-Fi speed: 22 Mbps download / 1.5 Mbps upload

Cons:
- Construction on street directly behind hotel. Caused Wi-Fi outage the first day, some morning noise, and closure of stairs directly to town square.
- No one at the reception in the afternoon or evening.
- Breakfast buffet is pretty basic with choice of eggs cooked to your liking.

Tips:
- Take the informative Wiseman Free Walking Tour (in English) at 10:30am. Look for the red umbrella in front of the Tourist Information Office at main square.
- Many big-bus tours overrun central Cesky Krumlov during the middle of the day. Get an early start before the big buses arrive from Prague starting around 11am.

Room tip: Apartment With Sauna is large, bright, quiet and has good views of Cesky Krumlov

Our family stayed in 3 different rooms. All rooms are spacious and clean. The location is not far from all attractions. Breakfast is served in the dining room on lower ground floor. Staff are very friendly and helpful.

A great location, and a huge super clean and warm room. Free car parking and good reasonably-priced breakfast.

Staff are friendly and really helpful, except for the woman who checked us out. Maybe she’d woken up on the wrong side of the bed!

I would stay again, but definitely check if the roadworks are ongoing as they are noisy & right outside.

This place has some very real advantages, and some things we found very frustrating. Let me start out with what we liked:

The Good -- Location. It is an easy walk into the main tourist areas. Coming back will require some stairs but it's not a long walk at all.
The room itself was very large and was very clean.
The bathroom was excellent and recently renovated.
Free parking for a couple of cars at least.

The Bad -- we arrived around 5 or 6 in the evening and the place seemed abandoned. We thought maybe it had closed or something. We had been traveling for almost two weeks and were not checking our email at all. We also did not have the ability to make phone calls in the Czech Republic without being charged a hefty price for international dialing. Anyway, we finally found a small note saying that the proprietors had been trying to reach us to find out what time we were arriving. They had been emailing for a couple of days. Well, as noted we weren't checking emails while traveling. The note said to call the proprietor for instructions to enter the building. At this point in our travels, we had about 2 minutes left for international calling so I had to use those last 2 minutes to call, and ask her to VERY QUICKLY tell me how to get in. Honestly, we considered just leaving since the room had not been paid for yet and they did not take any credit card information to hold the room. Instead, we luckily got through on the first call and were told how to get in. Once inside, the room was excellent. But this process was very frustrating.

My question - why not tell us when booking the room that we needed to notify them of our arrival time in order to be let in. What if I had no way of making a call in a foreign country? I had emailed with the owner (I think it was the owner) back and forth several times to book - I think we should have been told about this arrangement then so we knew that there was not a staffed front desk and that we would need instructions for entering.
