“Barbara made us very welcome in her cosy Casa”

We were keen to try a self-catering break in the Taha Valley/Ferreirola area and Google brought us to Casa Barbara. We contacted its owner Barbara Lynch and booked for a week’s stay in early October. Language-teacher Barbara kindly met us off the bus in Pitres and drove us to Ferreirola – a very welcome gesture after a spectacular but longish trip from Granada. This saved us a bit of a trek. Casa Barbara turned out to be a typical village house which she has converted into a charming, quirky hideaway. Adjoined to her own house, it has two bedrooms, kitchen, bathroom, a lovely balcony/dining area and a comfortable lounge featuring a superb collection of books as well as a table full of useful info for walkers. The whole ambience was reminiscent of the kind of seaside bungalow your parents might have rented when you were a child.
The old-fashioned but fully equipped kitchen was well-stocked with some essential foods which Barbara told us to feel free to use (and she had also done some shopping for us because the supermarket in Pitres was closing just before the bus arrived). The house also features a flat roof with views across the valley; it’s a lovely place to sit and read as the sun heads for the horizon and the heat of the day diminishes (but Barbara warns: don’t indulge alcoholically up there, because the access is via a steep flight of steps requiring full concentration and an ability to walk backwards!)
Ferreirola is beautifully located in the heart of the Alpujarras mountains. It’s ideally placed for walks in the La Taha Valley, but it is remote, and a car (or a generous host like Barbara Lynch) is almost essential if you’re self-catering. There are no shops in the village; the baker’s van arrives daily, a frozen-food van calls a few days a week, and we also heard that there is a vegetable van. So without a car you have to walk up the steep and sweaty track to shop in Pitres. (And in the supermarket you might meet the most coldly hostile person we have ever encountered behind a shop counter.) But that’s another story: in short, we enjoyed our stay, the price was right – we walked our legs off, and as Barbara waved us off on the bus back to Granada we left with a lot of happy memories.

“The perfect holiday”

We spent a week in the idyllic village of Fuerrerola and were extremely reluctant to leave. Casa Barbara is in the most peaceful setting imaginable, with a backdrop of The Sierra Nevada to enjoy from the pretty balcony. The property is 500 years old and full of character; plenty of room to relax, spotless linen, a well equipped kitchen (with the added luxury of a washing machine) and a very friendly host. This is the perfect place to unwind, enjoy breathtaking scenery and soak up the atmosphere of rural Spain. If you enjoy walking and getting away from the tourist trail then this is a holiday not to be missed. To paraphrase a previous reviewer, I am reluctant to recommend Casa Barbara because I want to keep it all to myself. We cannot wait to return.
