The location is amazing in a small town but within one hour of everywhere on the Island. This is a great family-friendly home with stunning views. Amazing sunrises and sunsets. Perfect area for hiking and site seeing. One of the most friendly places we have ever been to. The outside kitchen is a perfect addition which we used frequently and enjoyed fresh eggs daily from our very own chickens. The horse also enjoyed carrots and apples, Such a beautiful place that we are definitely going back.
The house, the view of the Atlantic, the surrounding topography, the local cultural experiences, all were nothing short of spectacular. Our hosts, Luis and Rita, were friendly and most helpful; Luis with his regaling of Azores history and with Rita producing for us one scrumptious home-cooked evening meal featuring local fare.
We enjoyed our stay (one week) very much. The house is beautifull, inside and outside. The reception was so friendly, we could make use of all vegetables from the garden that were ready to eat. The view is magnificent.
We had a wonderful time at Quinta do Sanguinhal for our first visit to the Azores. We told Luis that we waited to come until we could stay here, and this is true. We're glad we did! We enjoyed learning more about São Miguel and the Nordeste region while getting to know our gracious hosts, Luis and Rita. The house was comfortable and well-equipped, but the views of the wide Atlantic from the porch are the best part. We also really enjoyed the garden and the chickens. We took every opportunity to be outside on the porch and made many of our meals at the house. With eggs from the chickens, produce from the garden, fresh baked goods and herbs from Rita, a few provisions purchased at the blue market in town as well as a larger market in Povoacão about 25 minutes' drive away, we had all we needed - including excellent wine and cheese. We had a delicious meal of octopus stew, bread and soup prepared by Rita! Agua Retorta is a small, quiet village accessed by excellent but windy roads. Renting a car is a good idea in order to visit the rest of the island. (We had no trouble getting up the driveway with the small standard rental through Thrifty/Hertz.) Highlights included nature-focused adventures - waterfall hikes, visit to the Furnas hot springs/Terra Nostra gardens and a day trip to the opposite side to see Sete Cidades craters and lakes. There are so many interesting places yet to see in the world, but we hope we'll come back to the Azores again. We highly recommend a visit!
This very spacious house was a treat. Situated all by itself on a beautiful mountain slope, 260 m above sea level, it gives a breathtaking panoramic view over the Atlantic Ocean. A sheltered veranda, some 20 m long, provides a great vista. In fact, it would be wonderful not to leave the veranda at all for days on end, if it wouldn't be for the beautiful surroundings, both immediately around the house (there's a narrow, winding footpath going down to the ocean which is a real challenge) and in the wider Agua Retorte area, which is still unspoiled, with splendid green nature, great walks, many birds and so on. And hardly any tourists. Luis and Rita, who take care of the house (the owner Helena Alvez is their daughter) live nearby and have excellent suggestions for what is worth seeing in that area. They really are very hospitable and sympathetic people. There's a vegetable garden next to the house, from which you can take you lettuce and other greens, and a chicken shack which provides fresh eggs if you fraternize with the chickens and give them some corn regularly. We had a very nice and relaxed time there and we can recommended the house without any hesitation.
