Today's tour guide was a young aboriginal who hardly spoke at all the whole trip. When asked a question it was a single word answer sofly spoken that most guests couldn't hear or understand due to his heavy accent and limited english. I don't blame him, I blame the aboriginal adults back at the dock who should have assisted or coached him if this was his first trip. Poor management and an embarrassment to our international guests. Nothing on culture,no insight into their culture, local mythology or the river's abundant food chain, traditional uses for many plants and animals as well as the bush survival skills. We disembarked on the Arnhem Land side of the river for a woomera display only, no other traditional hunting & gathering implements as advertised. Would not recommend this our until they get their act together.

We did this approximately two hour adventure on the East alligator River (by boat). This is run by local aboriginal people and the money goes back into Kakadu National Park.

Our “skipper“ was a local aboriginal born and bred in Kakadu and Arnhem land. He was passionate about his lands and heritage which showed through in his presentations. We saw and learned about many crocodiles which he duly pointed out. We heard stories of crocodile attacks in the past largely due to people not heeding warning signs. We also saw vehicles that have been washed off a nearby causewayAgain due to peoples’ carelessness.

He also pointed out rock formations and took us to a landing point on Arnhem land which is an aboriginal reserve. We saw a true billabong there. There is a good vantage point for Arnhem land and the alligator River. He gave us a demonstration of spear-throwing (very good and interesting) using a Woomera, before returning back to our starting point.

This was certainly an experience not to miss.

We were three friends looking for the right way to explore Alligator River for the first time. The Guluyambi Cultural Cruise was perfect. Our captain Tyrone was so generous with his time and knowledge. Really accessible way to begin to understand First Peoples' relationship with Kakadu and Arnhem Land. Rock paintings. Crocodiles. Spear throwing. Such an impressive tourism operation. Great value for money.

We visited the country of Tyrone, our open and enthusiastic local boat guide, who lives in Arnhem Land and works for Guluyambi Cultural Cruise in Kakadu, on the other side of the East Alligator River. After some croc-spotting, Tyrone took us upstream from Cahill's Crossing to his favourite fishing and hunting spot, where we landed on a sandy billabong that runs parallel to the river (his 'supermarket'). He showed us the hyacinth tree that he uses to make light-weight spear-throwers that float, and spears made of three kinds of local materials found readily in his 'Bininj (rhymes with Bunnings) Warehouse'. In a spear-throwing demonstration, his spears landed 50m away on the other side of the river. Tyrone also showed us the rock art along the river - his family are well recognised painters in the area. It was an honour to be shown this place by such a knowledgeable and friendly guide.
