Our Eat ,Drink and Explore three days was the highlight of our visit to W.A.
It was the first time visit to the West Coast of Australia. We did not know whether or not to take a one day tour of Margaret River or take the three day tour. We chose the three day tour and it certainly was the right choice.
We did know of the wines associated with Margaret River but were unaware of the towns and history of the area.
We were picked up early in Perth on day one of the tour by our guide,Neil. We then proceeded down the coast, stopping at various places of interest to explore.
Nearing Margaret River we were surprised that the landscape still had scares showing from the bush fires of 2011.The accommodation at Margaret River was magnificent, overlooking the coast.
Day two started with breakfast at the beach. We then proceeded to small unique businesses in the area, which if you had been driving by yourself, you would not notice and you would drive past. After exploring the famous caves in the area,we had lunch.
After lunch, more holiday makers were added to our tour and we were off to the vineyards.Beer, coffee, cheese, olive oil and of course wine were tasted and enjoyed during the afternoon,at some beautiful vineyards. Many purchases were done in this food and wine festival. We did manage to arrive back to the Hotel safely.
Day three again started with breakfast at the beach. We saw the famous surf and watched and talked to some of the local surfers. Then down to Cape Leeuwin to the Lighthouse. It was great to see where the Great Southern Ocean and the Indian Ocean meet. Then it was back into town.In the main street of Margaret River there is an ice cream shop make sure you go there and enjoy their products.
We then had to say goodbye to Margaret River and head back to Perth. This time we did not go via the coast but further inland. It was a long drive back but because we had struck up such friendships with Neil and our fellow travellers, it was fun and laughter all the way home.
Special mention must be made about Neil.Neil was born and bred in Margaret River and he knows most things about the area including most of the people. His knowledge is vast.He took us to his farm and introduced us to his family. He is a fun loving bloke who is proud of his area and of Western Australia. His famous quote is "West is Best"
Thanks Neil.
