Owner description: The Otago Peninsula is a long, hilly indented finger of land that forms the easternmost part of Dunedin, New Zealand. Volcanic in origin, it forms one wall of the eroded valley that now forms Otago Harbour. The peninsula lies south-east of Otago Harbour and runs parallel to the mainland for 20 km, with a maximum width of 9 km. It is joined to the mainland at the south-west end by a narrow isthmus about 1.5 km wide.

Driving out along the peninsula was a highlight. Scenery was stunning (where isn’t in NZ). We saw lots of birds along the way, and seal colonies. Stand out was the free look-out point (by the albatross centre- which you have to pay for), to see the royal albatross birds flying along the coastline. You'll see where it is (look for lots of bird poo on the ground)- watch out, as my partner did get pooed on.

Windy drive out to the peninsula, mystery around every corner. Stunning scenery and seal colonies and albatross in flight to view, wonderful.

We had a wonderful day visiting the Royal albatross sanctuary where 4 chicks were nesting on the grassy slopes. Have a look at their website for more details. The pub at Portobello did a great seafood chowder. Hoopers Inlet on the way to Allen’s Beach, is an undeclared bird park with so many birds wading in the waters. Allen’s Beach has great surf and maybe a wild sea lion might be sun baking on the beach. Portobello Road is a great driving, bike riding or Vespa riding experience all the way to Harrington Point. A wonderful understated peninsula on a world scale. Oh did I forget the views, the fishing and watching Albatross flight behind boat (take binoculars)

we really enjoyed driving around and exploring the Otago Peninsula, great attractions like the albatross cruise on the MV Monach, and a visit to learn all about the albatross breeding area.
