Owner description: The Dunedin Public Art Gallery is one of New Zealand's four major metropolitan art galleries. Established in 1884, the Gallery was New Zealand’s first Art Gallery and is renowned today for the richness of its historic collection and its close working relationship with major New Zealand artists. The Gallery houses a signifcant collection of New Zealand artworks covering the period from 1860 to the present. The collection also contains major holdings of historical European art, Japanese prints and the decorative arts. Historical works by renowned artists such as Turner, Gainsborough, Claude, and Machiavelli feature alongside the only Monet in a New Zealand collection and master works by Derain, Tissot, Burne-Jones and internationally acclaimed Dunedin artist Frances Hodgkins. The collection is fundamental to the Gallery’s exhibition programme, but many works of art are also sourced from other public and private collections in New Zealand and internationally. The Gallery presents a wide-ranging events programme of interesting lectures, floor talks, film and video screenings, performances and workshops. There are regular guided tours for key exhibitions or by arrangement. Located right in the heart of Dunedin, the Dunedin Public Art Gallery is within easy walking distance from a large number of hotels and on all major public transport routes. There are disabled facilities, the award-winning Nova cafe, a wonderful shop and free wi-fi in the Gallery foyer.

Situated right at the Octagon, this art gallery is a delight to visit. Making very good use of the space of this renovated building, the displays are well laid out. There are a large collection of old and modern artworks by NZ artists and also international ones. I particularly like e.g. the collection on Frances Hodgkins (not usually seen outside NZ). At the time of visit, a major exhibition on Gordon Walters: New Vision, Grahame Sydney: Etched in Time, Philip Jarvis: Toothpaste Tubes doing Parkour, plus some other modern pieces were all interesting to me.
The Nova Cafe attached to it is nice.
Recommended.

Visitors must visit the Art Gallery. The wealth of art in the Gallery is a testament to the wealth of Dunedin in the 19th century. For a small city there is good representation of some of the old masters. Free entry, with Nova cafe next door.

Having done lots of outdoor activities it was lovely to discover this very good Art gallery.
As we entered the gallery we were met by a very friendly and informative lady.
The displays included some very good New Zealand artists none of whom I knew and the work was beautifully laid out.
Then there was a very good range of European art also.
Really enjoyed the visit, Thank you.

We both enjoyed the old paintings on the ground floor and there are even some from the great masters. I found some of the paintings really enjoyable to see the talents of painters 100's of years ago. Spent a good 45 minutes wondering around. Then we went to the first flour that was full of many variations of the same theme. Lots of black and white lines, less than 10 minutes later we were out. Free to look round.
